Thanks,

Many of the places in the original post will have Thanksgiving dinner this year, although prices have changed.

Der Dutchman has Thanksgiving buffet 10:30 am - 5 pm. $21.99/adults, 12 & under $8.99
Great place for home-style cooking.

Michael's on East, Cafe L'Europe, Ophelia's will all be open for Thanksgiving.

The Columbia on St. Armands does a nice Thanksgiving dinner. Adults $21.95, 10 & under $5.95.

Mattison's offers a Feast-to-go of a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings, sides, rolls & pie for $130, order by Sunday 11/23. 921-3400 or dine in 11 - 1 on Thanksgiving for $24/adult, $12/child.

Duvall's in downtown Sarasota offers dinners at $34.95/adults, $15.95/children plus they will send home a to-go bag with leftovers to munch on the next day.

Polo Grill & Bar in Lakewood Ranch offers both buffet and carryout dinners at $37.95/person.

Pierr 22 on the Bradenton riverfront will serve Thanksgiving dinner 11:30 am - 10 pm. Adults $27.95, children 12 & under $12.95.

For less expensive options, Golden Corral on Cortez Rd in Bradenton has a decent buffet spread for around $14 and Cracker Barrel offers dinners at $10.99/adults & $5.99/children -- there's one at I75 & SR64. Cracker Barrel also offers full meal-to-go if you order ahead for $59.99 (pies are extra).

As to the little debate going on about Thanksgiving on this thread..... you have the freedom to celebrate or not celebrate the holiday, so why rain on someone else's parade if they choose to look at Thanksgiving differently than you?

On Facebook there's a group that is boycotting businesses that are open on T'giving. I personally agree that businesses should be closed for the holiday so workers can be with their families.

Smart businesses are OPEN on holidays because they make money, or haven't you heard?

Yep, money over family... the way of the world, unfortunately.

My mom was a nurse (now retired), my one brother is a fireman, my sister a lab tech. All have worked the major holidays over the years, hospitals and fire fighting don't shut down for Thanksgiving or Christmas. We never could get everyone together on the actual holiday, it would always have to be before or after. Police, doctors, EMTs also have to provide coverage on holidays. If you travel for Thanksgiving, you want to be able to buy gas, right? If your battery dies, you'd like AAA to bring you a new one. If the power goes out or your cable quits, you want to be able to reach customer service to report the outage and have it fixed as soon as possible. Everyone cannot take the day off on Thanksgiving.

That being said, I personally am not a fan of retail stores opening for Black Friday on Thanksgiving. So I refuse to shop then. Apparently there are enough other people that want to participate in the grab fest, or the stores would not be open. Commercialism has taken over most U.S. holidays, unfortunately.

Well, not that it really matters but, just to keep the record straight, Canada, Puerto Rico, Norfolk Island, and Liberia also observe Thanksgiving.

Many, many people observe the day as a formal opportunity to reflect on their lives and to be thankful for their blessings like family, friends, health, and success to whatever degree they have achieved. Some are thankful to be living in the US or a place where they can enjoy freedom. The fact that it is a government-chosen date shouldn't diminish the day's origin or meaning, and the fact that it has a commercial component that is undeniable really doesn't matter. I mean, look at Christmas. It has all of the things you've mocked Thanksgiving as missing (it is sacred, the date was set by the church not the government, it is celebrated around the world) but people work on the day and it's as commercially hyped as anything. Just because people work on the day doesn't mean that it can't be about family and just because someone participates in the commercial aspects of the holiday doesn't make the day meaningless for them.

Yeah, no kidding.

Perhaps a "Hateful Old Curmudgeon Day" might be more acceptable to the puppet.
