On Thursday the kids and I were at Blind Pass Beach, and as soon as we got there we started coughing, and continued to the whole time we were there. I also felt burning in my nostrils. We were obviously reacting to something, but what?
Then yesterday we were at Siesta Key and we were fine (it was quite a bit colder and windier, though). Any ideas?

Red tide. You might want to check this out before you go to the beach.

Oh, well that explains it then - thanks.
There were a few dead fish around, but the water looked okay. I'd heard of red tide but never encountered it before.

If you are on the beach and start to hear a lot of people coughing, you know it is the red tide.

The red tide has been fairly bad this year. We normally go a lot during the winter but haven't this year because of it.

I walked on Siesta on Tuesday morning and was coughing and my throat was hurting by the end of it. Sigh. Same thing for the people I was with.

The first time we made trip to Disney World when our kids were much smaller--almost 30 yrs ago--I was driving across the Tampa/Clearwater causeway I think and we had the windows down...
My eyes started to water and I started to cough...didn't bother the others very much at all--but I was driving and had terrible time actually seeing...and no where to pull over...
did not have a clue what it was for years but it was awful...
red tide...

Considering moving to the area but want a lot of beach time. I've never heard of red tide. Is it a common problem?
