Is it possible to get by without a car and just walk to grocery stores, library, dining, beach, etc. or rely on bus routes in any areas or neighborhoods of Venice or Sarasota?

Yes, but keep in mind the scat doesn't run on Sundays, or past 6pm.

The summer thunderstorms during rainy season can really cause issues with walking and waiting for a bus. The lightning can be deadly and you might need to take cover inside at times. The downpours are very heavy and can get you soaked, but the lightning can be dangerous(more so in FL than many other states.).

Also, the summer months can be very humid and hot...which means your clothes might be soggy from sweat if you are outside for longer than 20 minutes.

I would think on the Island most of your needs can be met without a car. Perhaps a bike would make things a lot easier in our hot summers. I live off the island in a developement called Venice Gardens. We can walk to restaurants, some stores ( not a big grocer) and the beach is just about 2 miles away. So I would say you can do without a car. The SCAT buses can get you around the county but don't run all night so you will need to plan ahead.

There are some routes that run on Sunday, and some past 6pm. Depends on the route.

Thanks. Looks like the 13 route runs through Venice and stops at the grocery store, Walmart, and downtown Venice.
