I think diagonal makes the room look larger and classier - IMO

Here's one vote for the Nay column. It might be my general dislike of tile (except baths, kitchens and mud rooms), but I think diagonal looks funny. And it might date your rooms in 20 years.

Assuming your room is rectangular, I think diagonal looks better if you can afford the extra expense. If I couldn't do diagonal, I'd ask about staggering, for a more modern look. I don't think diagonal would "date" the place as much as the type of tile itself. Colors, sizes, shapes and styles come and go...

One of the things I insisted on when building our house last year was tile on the diagonal. Yes, installation cost is higher, but I love the look. We plan on living in this house a long time so, if I had decided not to do it because of cost, I would be looking at the floor and regretting it every day!

It is relative IMO since the tile, the room size and flow, and the price upgrade vary from situation to situation...
if you don't have good tile people you may get more trouble than you bargain for--
they need to order more tile and estimate correctly too--and if they don't do that and come up short before it is all done, you may not be able to get the same color match...
and they need to plan/project where the cuts need to be--too many cuts IMO make it look like mosaic vs diagonal...
