My husband and I are thinking about moving to Venice in the summer of 09.
I have recently heard some pretty negative things about the job market as well as the housing market. I know that in 2 years things could improve or go down just the same, but I was wondering what our chance of success would be.
I am currently go to school for massage therapy, and I feel like I could do really well in SW Florida. My husband is a Corrections officer for the state of Maryland and is making about 40,000/yr which is one of the better jobs in our current area. I don't think he wants to go back into the prison system when we move but he is open to anything, before this job he was a mechanic for 10 years so he a lot of credentials, in many different fields...Can somebody tell me what they think the chances of him finding a good paying job would be in Venice or surrounding areas. And what the current hourly rate is for a massage?! As I plan on owning my own massage business.

I am not sure what the hourly rate is, but given all the retirees, and spring training in the area, I'm sure you could do nicely at a chiropractor or Physical Therapy office in the areas. They have flex hours, and pay nicely I hear. Your husband could do well in a trade job in the area. What there are not a lot of are corporate jobs that pay very well. Depending on your dual income where you are, you will definitely have to budget differently. The Venice area is very nice, and close to the beach. The housing prices should drop into next year, and start to rise again by mid 09 to 2010...that is the word on the street with all the large builders.

There should be some nice rentals still available at that time, and you might want to think about doing that until you really scope out the area. North Port might be a good place, as they are still hiring on the police force (very little violent crime, but loads of traffic tickets, and increasing petty crime.) There is very little there right now, so massage could be a great start-up business in the area. Homes are much much cheaper than Venice, but only about 20 minutes away.

Best of luck to you.

Not to be funny but a corrections officer would do well here. Sarasota or Charlotte County. Mostly petty drug-related or DUI crimes here. The occasional embezzlement. I see a lot of massage people (my chiropractor) here but if you have anything to do with medical profession you will have a job. NP police sounds like a good idea also or Sarasota sherrif dept. If you are good with hands and dependable you should find something. Dependable being the key word. You won't make a killing but if you are frugal, find the right house you will enjoy the area. I was out bike-riding all afternoon today. I'm between jobs and recovering from operation so I'm enjoying the time off. We will be going to Venice Xmas Boat parade on Sat eve and the a parade and art festival in Englewood on Sunday. My wife has a week off before Xmas and we will do Disney again this year. (it's slow before the holiday and Fla residents get a discount). The season is just getting started.....

Venice is in a good proximity to Sarasota and Bradenton. This is the side of Tampa Bay you want to be on anyway....
