Newtown is an old area of Sarasota. Boundaries are US41, Martin Luther King Blvd., Washington Blvd (301) and around north of 20th Avenue.
Ringling School of Design actually sits on one corner of the border on MLK and 41.
Newtown is a known drug area. However, as the growth pushes north from Fruitville, this area too, in time will turn over as the demand for downtown living creeps north and revitalization occurs.

Thanks! I know exactly where that is too. My husband and I stayed at the Quality Inn on Tamiami this past weekend and I thought our Real Estate agent was going to vomit when he found out. He suggested a hotel on Lido Beach but when my husband had his secretary make our reservations he told her to find something inexpensive and I guess the Quality Inn is what she found....apparently there was a 'pirate' festival in the area? I told him next time to tell her we are willing to pay at least $100 a night for a room - the $23 a night we saved by staying there was not worth it.
Anyway according to our RE agent that was the worst area in Sarasota - our thoughts were if there is a "worst area in Sarasota" we definately want to see it before we move there...lol!

There's always areas that are less desireable than others. Many of the hotels between the airport and MLK are less than desireable although under $100. Lots of "drug rental" rooms in that stretch of highway. Holiday Inn on Lido would have been a better choice.

Isn't that where Sarasota's "Ugliest Home" is?

There's some pretty ugly homes not in that area as well.

Be aware of CDD communites, be sure you know the facts, do your research on the net on CDD communities. Your realtor will not tell you all the facts. LWR is CDD and I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. Many other dislike CDD also. Maybe its for you though, can't say. There are some nice areas in East Bradenton, Mill Creek for example is beautiful, and not very cookie cutter. University Park in Sarasota is nice, and NW Bradenton is very nice also, just be sure to go WAY NW..

I suppose many do not like having a CCD,I can understand that but on the other hand, the areas that have CDD's are very well kept up.I walk my dogs late at night and feel very safe. I don't live in LWR but the only reason someone wouldn't touch it,is probably because the couldn't afford it.
Not having money is a drawback and this is only meant in a nice way,not a snobbish way.
