HI,

This forum has been so helpful in giving my husband and I information on our possible move to Englewood/Venice Sarasota. I know that there must be many creative ways people have come up with to deal with the summer heat, so I thought I would ask to see what people have come up with.

thanks!

Honestly, I love it, but I try to do things outdoors either early in the morning, or after sundown in the summer time as much as possible. It still beats hibernating all winter like I had to up north. At least as far as I'm concerned it does.

I'm in Oakland, CA where it's currently 58 degrees and 91% humidity. I hate cold and I really hate cold weather in the summer, but this is pretty typical here.

We're headed to Sarasota in a few weeks to look at options. We moved to CA over 30 years ago from Delray Beach when the tech boom began.

Hawaii probably has the most perfect weather and it's one of my favorite places. Sadly it's important to be practical and I have a feeling living there is not what we want.
I hope the Sarasota area proves to be just that.

Default Sarasota Question

HI,

My husband and I live in Santa Rosa. Same type of summer here, foggy, cold (normally) and no rain. Though I do love being able to have our windows open so much of the year.

We are looking at Venice and Sarasota too because of livability and because we both love to swim in outdoor lap pools.

i would be very interested in your experience in Sarasota please share it when you get back. How did you come to choose Sarasota?

Have a good trip!

Cathy

Thanks Frida7, it's good to know that it just takes some workaround to deal with it. I agree, it does beat hibernating during the winter, we get weeks of steady rain and clouds here.

Weather here has been lows in the 70's, highs in the low-mid 90's, chance of rain. That pretty much describes summer down here. You just plan and dress accordingly. Shorts, light shirts are pretty much the norm unless you have to go into the office.

Most people I know live in air conditioning. Unless they (1) choose to work in their yard, (2) go to the beach, (3) walk the dog, (4) have jobs in landscaping or construction, they are not in the heat that much.

If you go to a big box store, you have to choose between (a) parking your car in the shade and walking across a hot parking lot in the sun, or (b) parking close to the door with a short walk but a return to a car that has transformed itself into an oven. Many trips to the store in my first month as a resident, has created the first tan I have had in 30 years. I get almost all my sun (which I hate) walking to the car. I don't mind the heat, but hate the sun.

I find that if I work up a sweat from being outside, it is fun to go back into air conditioning, and have the thrill of the cold air evaporating the sweat. Also popsicles, McDonald's ice cream cones and ice tea have a new importance in my life.

I love the sun!
Every chance I get I vacation somewhere warm, ocean and sun thrill me. Actually, I enjoy the rain, too. Weather's wonderful as long as it's warm, anything but FOG!! I'm the only person I know who keeps the windows open in hot weather. I always did all summer in Florida and I do whenever I'm anywhere warm. Fans are a necessity.
Catagonia, I'll check in and let you know what we've found.
