Looking for a late summer vacation destination with the family. We are more of a scenic-outdoor family than amusement parks. Looking for a destination away from flat!! We plan on driving, possibly camping. Others have talked about Tenn and certain parts of Georgia. Looking for ideas??? The closer (less drive time) the better. Thanks!

Check out Pine Mountain, Ga. It is in the middle of the state, not way up in the northern part of the state. Nearby attractions include FDR's Little White House, Callaway Gardens, and the historic area of Pine Mountain.

I agree on Pine Mountain or Callaway. If you stay in state the closest you come to a mountain would be a hill in Lake Wales.

Depends on one's idea of a 'mountain'.
If the OP is looking for some scenery and slight elevation change, northern GA is the closest.

If the OP wants considerably less heat and more of 'mountain experience', for camping or hiking, drives, etc., Western NC: Robbinsville, Sylva, Waynesville, et al, and of course SMNP, most of which is on the NC side, some on the TN side.

It isn't 'next door' to Sarasota area: ~10 hrs drive, one way.
