DON'T MOVE TO SARASOTA!!!!! We are looking to leave ASAP!! I am a special education teacher and my husbad drives a drywall truck for a living. We are not rich, but are in the medium income braket for the state. However in Sarasota we just at or below poverty level.

Like I said, I'm a teacher. The superindent makes almost 200K with a $700 monthly car allowance (which we pay for). I make about 35K and work with kids who hit, spit and bite me daily. There are fewer kids in SRQ county than other neighboring counties but school officials (Dr. Norris) make more than neighboring counties superindents.

There are snowbirds here year round. You can identify them easily - continuous blinkers, 15 mph in a 45 mph zone, or cars with no drivers (they are to short to be seen over the steering wheel). This last summer we drove the Cinnicinatti and Virginia and back (paid for by my inlaws, we couldn't afford to do it ourselves). The worst traffic was in FL! We were cut off, flicked off, and almost wrecked leaving and coming back into FL.

We have a house which we bought for 165K, it's 3 bedroom with 2 bathroom. It's built crooked. No kidding, the entire house leans! It was about 11 yrs old when we bought it. It was all we could afford that was not in the projects. It's on less than an 1/4 arce. The backyard is one large ditch which I'm sure breeds all types of snakes and bugs (we don't go back there often because it's a ditch!). We live near Ashton elementary (less than 1/2 mile), one of the best public ele schools in the area. There are several pedifiles in the area and a couple of crack houses.

Yes there are a lot of cops! They keep the streets very safe unless you talk about the pedifiles, drugs, shootings, bulgerlies, ... We have a watch dog. Get one, you'll need it in SRQ! The cops are there for the middle or low income classes, without us they's have no one to wrongfully accuse of riddiculous crimes. Remember Carlie Bruccia (we knew her, she smoked pot near our house) she was killed in Sarasota, there was a body found under a bridge on 75 and it only took the cops 3 days to determine if it was man or woman (they're getting much better, they much be watching CSI)...

There is little to do here. We have a 1 yr old and going to Mote Marine gets lame (we haven't done it yet because it cost money, but I go with school). We can go to the movies or get a baby sitter, not both. We can out to dinner and drink soda, you have to eat before you get there because it's so expensive!

Yes we have our fair share of celebritries - Pee Wee Herman (don't remember his real name), Jerry Springer, (Mr. Meister said Bryan Adams, it's Bryan Johnson), ...

If you want your 10 yr old to get an education don't come to FL. There's a reason the state ranks in the low 40s (I believe it's 49th right now). He'll be bored out of his mind with the lack of activities. He'll suffer irreversibe pyschological damage that even the best therapist can't counter act!

FORGET ABOUT SARASOTA NOW! You live in Sarasota, you die in Sarasota (due to boredom and lack of funds to leave)!

sandbunne81,

My wife is also a teacher here in town and would not change her job for any other. We both love the area and would not consider moving anywhere else.

Best of luck where ever you move and we will not miss you here, while we hang at the beach, bike ride, jog, boat, etc................all year round.

Question Consider the east coast

The east coast of flroida near the center of the state sebastian inlet new smyrna etc is a much better choice it is still very much natural and for the most part relatively undeveloped. Areas such as Sebring are a nice choice as well with rolling hills thousands of lakes and beautiful state parks. And the people in those areas seem to be more personable as well and far less pretentious than the scum you find here in Sarasota. I believe a previous poster hit the nail on the head when she said that there is no sense of community in Sarasota, there isn't. My girlfriend threw a birthday party for me and my neighbor called the police because there were too much noise at 8pm everyone was forced to leave. Unless you plan on rolling down Longboat Key in your Benltly toward your 6 million dollar home, Sarasota is far from your best choice.

I'm no spring chicken , but I do have a 10 year old boy, and want to be able to live in a young-family-friendly community.

Then I heard about Lakewood Ranch...during my visit to the general area, I really couldn't get "into" the ranch because of all the security gates so it was hard to get a real feel. One poster did say it was very "cookie cutter" like - and I did get that same impression as I peered thru the gates. Anyhow, very constasting view on Lakewood Ranch as well......your thoughts....again! Thanks!
Nancy,

I do live in Lakewood Ranch but not behind the gates of the Country Club. There are many "Villages" in Lakewood Ranch that are very nice and totally family oriented. I did a lot of research before relocating here. There is a hospital, corporate park, shopping, adventure park, dog park and dining within LWR and more is coming this year. All the schools (elementary and middle school) are in walking distance.

We do like the community but we will be relocating of the state this spring. I I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Right now in Sarasota proper there are plenty of houses under 250K. A little south to the Venice area and you can even find pool houses for about the same $. Go to North Port and there is all you want for under 200K. I have several houses in Sarasota county valued at about 200K, some more some less. Without homestead the taxes average 2000. per year and insurance is about 1100. per year. The same type of house ( Sq Ft lot size etc) in Orange or Rcokland Countie, suburbs of NYC would cost over $400K annual taxes over $10K and insurance about the same. The same applies to Long Island except the taxes would be higher out there. Plus you have State and City income taxes which take about 10% of your gross income on top of the Fed's take.
There is alot of complaining down here about affordable housing in the City of Sarasota, how terrible it is not to be able to work and live in the city. Well I would love to live on Central Park South or 5th Ave and 63rd St. but I dont have the extra 10 Million needed to do so. I did what millions of others did I COMMUTED 45 minutes to work. Marina Jack's is great, free parking at Siesta Beach, Van Wezel, free boat launch ramps and plenty of work for people who are willing to work. I've been half way around the world and Sarasota is the best.

Here's the real deal...I was BORN and RAISED in "Sorrysota"

I am now 34....I am married with a one year old and we are getting out of this retirement community as soon as humanly possible. I will list the good and the bad for you.
GOOD- Amazing beaches & good schools despite what others say.
BAD- ALL OF IT BESIDES THE ABOVE. Too many old people, Boring, No good shopping, No good restaurants, Housing prices on the retarted side and the list goes on.
Do yourself a favor and stay OUT of Florida forever!

I just wonder if there people who keep posting to stay out of Florida are just wanting to keep people from moving to Florida by posting negative statements.
I love to go to Sarasota, but it is expensive to get home there now.

LOL - we used to call it "Sorrysota, too!" While I wouldn't go so far as to tell people to stay out of Florida, I completely agree with all the negative that has been posted about this place. People should be able to see that those of us who lived in Sarasota for a good length of time would be telling it like it is. It is a beautiful place for a vacation, but living here is another story. I am sorry, but not buying the claims about all the "affordable" housing there, with those low amounts listed for taxes and insurance. Those amounts would have to be for homes owned for years and assessed very low. Sarasota is one of the most EXPENSIVE counties for taxes and insurance around. We almost lost our home while living there because it was so unaffordable.

I love where I live now, up here in my beautiful little rural town. Give me the country and hills anyday over the beaches - beaches are overrated. I can be at the beach in an hour if I want, but I really never want. At any rate, I think there are better beach towns to live in, like say, St. Pete. That would be my choice if I wanted to live near the water - it's an awesome place.
