Looking to move to the Venice area from New Jersey. Does anyone have any input on Cardinal Mooney high school? My son would be an incoming freshman in 2018.

IMO, I would choose Venice High over CM. I attended the Venice schools as did my brother and one of my kids and I think they are excellent. The parents I know who have their kids in the Venice schools seem to be pleased as well. CM has been around since the 50's, it's expensive and I haven't heard the best reviews from other parents.

Also, why would you live in Venice and send your child to CM? It's about a 35-40 minute drive depending on where you are in Venice.

Here's the link to the CM web site, they have info such as test scores, parent-teacher ratios, etc posted on the site for review: Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School - Top Accredited Private Education in Sarasota FL

You can find information regarding all Sarasota county public schools (Venice is located within Sarasota county) at:
Sarasota County Schools - Home

Academics are an important factor in selecting a school, but sometimes other factors are important to parents as well. I've had friends perfectly satisfied with public schools for their children and others that preferred the private school environment for theirs. I'm glad there are choices in our area for parents regarding schooling.

It's been ten years already since my daughter graduated from CM. She had an exceptionally good experience. Of course, the student gets out of it what they put into it and she put a lot into it but they provided her a great education, great extra curricular opportunities, and exposure to some wonderful people/families in Sarasota that she probably would not have received otherwise. We didnt really raise her in a religious environment but I like that she received that exposure. They also instilled in her the importance and value of service. In fact, she decided that she wanted to go into non-profit work as a result of her experiences at CM. Is it the best HS around? I have no idea. What I do know is that it was a wonderful investment in her development and some of her friends have gone on to law school, medical school, get MBAs, and start their own businesses.

When she was there, I believe there were kids from Venice and even as far away as 1.5 hrs. commute time.

It is always great to hear parents who see their children thrive in whatever educational enviornment they are in--public or private--and come away as capable adults...

SoFlGl, my sons have never gone to a public school. I like the private school environment over the public school environment. Where my home is in Venice, it is a 15-20 minute commute. Thanks for the input.
