On a recent trip my husband and I had the chance to attend the open house at the SKY Academy. Charter schools are not common in the Northeast and the ones we do have tend to not have good reputations. As a teacher myself I was impressed with the technology in the math classroom I visited as well as the fact that it is based on the idea that middle schoolers need to move and develop healthy habits.

Are you familiar with the school? What kind of reputation does it have? How does it compare to Venice Middle School?

Thanks in advance.

I have a neighbor in North Port who sends their kids to Sky Academy. She's pretty picky about where she sends her kids and she seems to like Sky.

Venice schools, in general, are pretty good. I attended Venice Elementary as did my oldest kid. She was in their full time gifted program.

Sky is a great school. Our child is in 7th, and has been there since she started 6th grade. Admins are great, and in our experience, if you have an issue- they are right on top of it. It's a much smaller school than public middle, so staff and admins actually know each child- they aren't just a face in a sea of others. 99% of the Teachers are excellent and very willing to help their students. I love the fact that they have PE 2x per day, and a great after school sports program. I have found the communication to be quite impressive. Majority of teachers send out text notifications for homework and upcoming tests, as well as keep updated webpages for parents and students to keep informed. We live in a neighboring city and happily go out of our way a bit to be sure our child can get a qulity education.
