IMO this is a very good informative article from today's Sarasota Herald Tribune:

Southwest Florida cities rank in middle of the pack on AARP's new livability index | HeraldTribune.com

"In a sign that retiring baby boomers may prize nightlife and walkability over country clubs and beaches, Florida’s communities make only a so-so showing in a new measure of the best places to live when you’re 50 or older.

Fresh off its top ranking early this month as the country’s best place for overall well-being, Southwest Florida has landed in the middle of the pack when it comes to the Livability Index from AARP, unveiled Monday."

Wow, nightlife? I got sick of all that in my 30s. Give me beautiful beaches any day.

Some people don't have access to the Herald Tribune so here is the link to the main article on the AARP web site:

I think many people move to SW Florida for the climate - so the following is probably why SW Florida only scored "middle-of-the-pack" on the AARP Livibility Index:

** Climate is not a factor in AARP’s index, Lynott said, because the point of the exercise is to encourage communities to improve where they can.

“Weather is an important consideration in the minds of many,” she said, but “local officials cannot change the outcome of the weather.” **

In other words SW Florida would score higher if Climate was a part of the Livability Index. However take away the good climate - and there are other "issues" explaining why SW Florida only scores mediocre on the Livability Index.
