Venice is in the Sarasota County School District. I know a business teacher at Venice High and she loves it. I taught in North Port and really like their schools. North Port is also in Sarasota County just south of Venice.

If you go to the Sarasota County School District web page and click on the links for the Venice Schools you can read about them and their activities, school calendar, etc. School starts in Sarasota County on Monday, Aug. 24 for the kids. Charlotte County schools are already in session.

There is more for kids to do in North Port than Venice. Venice median age is in the 60's and North Port is in the 40's.

Ok thank you! Unfortunately my kids start here Wednesday so they would have to switch schools after the year has already started but it can't be avoided. Thanks so much for the information!

That comment may have been true and funny at one time, but that's changing. The new developments have more kids.

We looked at Bradenton, and wasn't impressed. I know there are some nicer areas inland but we would like to be fairly close to the beach. That's why we liked Venice. The town itself seemed kept up nicer, and close proximity to the ocean. Another question I have is that I have heard insurance there is very high. Especially if in a flood zone. Can anyone tell me approximately how much that runs on say a 200k home?? Thanks so much for all the information !

Sarasota county has one of the best school systems in the state of Florida. It also has Pine View School for the Gifted, which was ranked the top school in Florida and one of the top schools in the Nation. It is a public school and the requirements are that you live in Sarasota county, have an IQ of 130 or more, pass the achievement tests required and have teacher recommendations. I have one child who graduated from PV and another who attended for many years. It's a great school but it's not for every kid. It services grades 2nd-12th. Here's some more info on that subject:
Welcome to Pine View School
Pine View School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are many other fantastic schools in Sarasota and Manatee county's Here's a website where you can see how the schools are rated:
School Accountability Report...
or www.GreatSchools.com

Here are the school districts by zone: http://www.sarasotacountyschools.net...lrp/zones.aspx

Southside services most of the downtown area south of Main St. North of Main would be mostly Booker school district. The Palmer Ranch area is mostly Ashton school district. There are other schools in the area but these are ones that I have either had personal experience with or I have friends that have kids in the schools.

Sarasota ranks as one of the top districts in the state by a number of measures, including test scores, graduation rates and teacher compensation.

It offers distinctive programs tailored to different student needs, including Florida's only school for the gifted, the state's largest special needs school and one of a handful of career-focused high schools.

My family has extensive experience with the Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte county school systems. My grandmother went to many of the local schools that aren't even around anymore. My parents attended many local schools. My father went to Anna Maria Elementary school in the early 50's. My parents attended Manatee High School together and they graduated from Manatee Jr College and both went onto eventually graduate from The University of Florida.

I attended public, private and charter schools in all three counties. My children are and have attended public, private, gifted and online schools in all three counties. I know many of the teachers, principals, etc in the local schools and have friends with children in the local schools as well.

When it comes to the locals school systems, I have a lot of first hand knowledge.

Alright, if I were checking out schools other than Pine View these are the schools that I would look into, in order. This is also the order they fall in if you look at the stats on the state of FL.

I'll throw some zip codes and communities in as well to use for a general guideline but make sure you double check them with the map provided and the local school board as the map/zip codes may change if they add a new school, development or due to enrollment.

Keep in mind that there are other communities in each zip code worth checking out. I'm just trying to give you a starting point. Also, if the community is very large it might encompass two or three different schools.

Sarasota County also has what is called "School Choice". Click here to find out more about that: http://sarasotacountyschools.net/dep...t.aspx?id=2674

Here is the website for Manatee County Schools: http://www.manatee.k12.fl.us/
Attendance zones for Manatee county Schools: http://www.manateeschools.net/pages/...ignment_Lookup
And School Choice in Manatee County: http://www.manateeschools.net/pages/.../School_Choice

Another option is Florida Virtual School. My middle girl has done that for the last few years. It's worked out great for us but you and your child need to be very disciplined with turning in assignments, teacher conferences, etc. http://www.flvs.net/myFLVS/Pages/myFLVS.aspx

This website has some info on the local private schools in the area: http://www.privateschoolreview.com/c...L/county/12115
The Manatee Chamber of Commerce has a list of a few private schools in Manatee county: http://www.manateechamber.com/manate...e-schools.aspx
as does this website: http://www.floridasmart.com/local/co...on_private.htm

Please use this website when searching for properties: www.myfloridahomesmls.com It's the most up to date website.

I have attended the Venice Schools as has one of my daughters. My brother went to Venice High and a few of the teachers are still there! I, personally, have nothing but excellent things to say about the Sarasota school district as well as the Venice schools. I know there can be many variables--if they mesh with their teaches, how they get along with the other kids, etc. I have three girls of varying ages. We've done the public school route, Montessori school, private school, virtual school, gifted school, private college, etc. So, we've run the gamut on the local schools. I currently have one who just graduated from New College and went to the Venice schools as well as other local schools and Pine View, another who is 17 and ready to graduate, who again has gone the Pine View route, Montessori school, virtual school and various other public schools in the area and my little one who's 11 and also had lots of experience with the local schools. Since I have children who are school age I also keep in contact with other families who have children in many of the local schools. Often a the families are like ours where there may be older and younger siblings who are in or have been in the various local schools. When the kids all get together schools are a common topic of conversation.

Please be sure to verify school districts before purchasing a home.

As far as your question about flood zones, nobody can answer that without knowing what the BFE or Base Flood Elevation is of the home and where the home sits. Also, not all homes require flood insurance, if they don't then the flood is much cheaper. Then there are other things that insurance companies take into consideration-are the windows impact resistant or do they have protection, how close are you to a fire hydrant or natural body of water, what does the roof look like (and the style, is it hip), how old is the home, what is the home constructed of (wood, block, etc), how many toenails is the roof tied down with, etc. As you can see, there are many things that go into pricing out insurance and it does not go on the purchase price of the home. You also cant go on what your neighbor was quoted for insurance either.

Since you're looking in the Venice area--have you looked at Stoneybrook at Venice or Grand Palm? Those two areas might be to your liking due to some of the amenities-In-line Skating and Hockey Rink, Basketball Courts, Sand Volleyball Courts, Baseball/Soccer/Multi Purpose Field, Community Center, Activity Director, Media Room, Fitness Center, Lagoon Style Pool, Splash Fountain, Spa, Gazebo with Grills, Tennis Courts.

Thank you so much for all the great information! We definitely liked Venice better as a town than we liked Bradenton. My son is extremely smart and I imagine he would have no problem getting into Pineview but he plays baseball and I was unsure if they had sports. My 6 yr old is excited and has no reservations at all. My 15 yr old is quite nervous about leaving his friends and school. I'm hoping all works out to his benefit . I really appreciate all the feedback. It helps a lot!!

Wow! Ok, so you have children of varying ages? I didn't realize that. I have one girl who gradated from PV and one who attended from 2nd-7th grades at PV. I'm sure people who have been on the board are tired of hearing the same thing about PV from me but--here goes. Basically, as you can imagine, PV is definitely not for every kid. It was fantastic for my oldest and worked well for my middle girl for a while but then it wasn't the best option for her. Obviously, my girls have two different styles of learning. PV is a huge commitment for the kid as well as the parents. They expect and require volunteer hours from the parents. Most are OK with this but some parents work and cannot accommodate this requirement. PV holds an open house and during that open house you will be escorted around the campus by some of the high school kids. This would give you an opportunity to ask questions of the school and also the kids who attend. The number one question I get asked about PV is-"Do they have a lot of homework?" The answer in a nutshell is, yes. It also varies on grade level, teacher, etc.

A friend of mine, Mike Jennings, is the Vice Principal of Venice High. He's a great guy and runs a tight ship. I also know many parents with kids at Venice. Mike has been in the forefront of many great changes at Venice High as well as the district as a whole. Here's one of the many articles on things he has accomplishments while being at Venice High: http://www.sarasotacountyschools.net...&blogyear=2009 His wife, Tiffany, is also a local school teacher. I recommend you check out both PV and Venice and see how you and your child feel about both.

With the baseball end of it, PV doesn't have sports per se, its an academic orientated school- think Speech and Debate Club, Eco Club, Latin Club, Robotics, etc. He can however play baseball for a local high school and still attend PV. I know many kids transferred out into the various local high schools-mainly Riverview and Venice for their sports programs. Pine View is also big on rowing which is generally Sarasota Crew or Sarasota Scullers and many kids get offered scholarships due to their involvement with both organizations. My middle daughter was involved with Sarasota Crew. Several of the teachers also coach for Crew and Scullers (mostly Crew at PV).

I think you have a lot to think about and it's great you are looking at all options.
