If you haven't made plans yet on where to see the fireworks, or just wanted to know what else was going on July 4th weekend, here are a few things to do.

July 1st

Grand Prix Festival Downtown Block Party in Sarasota

This weekend festival will start 6PM-11PM. Main Street & Lemon. Get ready for fun with live bands, racing boats and meet some of the racing teams. This party, also referred to as the 'Boats on Main’ will be a blast. Free and open to the public. Sorry-there won't be a boat parade this year due to construction downtown.

July 2nd Events in Sarasota/Bradenton Area

Offshore Boat Races with Superstock and Aquax Races in Sarasota July 2nd & 3rd: Get ready for some speed racing! With speeds reaching over 100 mph, this is some of the best boat racing, right here on the Suncoast. Best view for the boat races are from Lido Beach. There is also VIP viewing at Sandcastle Resort. The race starts at 10 am to 3 pm and is open to all members of the public and also include Powerboat Open Practice.

Stars and Stripes 5K and Family 1K Fun Run in Bradenton: Pirate City: 1701 27th St East, Bradenton. This festival is hosted by Bradenton Marauders and will start at 8 AM. You are encourage to wear red, white or blue for this event in spirit of Independence Day. There are also t-shirts for the guests, and the running event will be classed according to ages. The top male and female will be recognized with all the runners above the age of 21 years receiving a free beer as part of event sponsorship from Leinenkugel Brewing Company. After the awards ceremony, there will be a post-race party.

July 4th Events in Sarasota and Bradenton

Selby Gardens' All American Barbecue and Independence Day Celebration: 811 S. Palm Ave, Sarasota. 6PM-10PM Are you in the mood for some good BBQ? Don’t miss Selby Gardens American Barbecue and Independence Day Celebration. 4 BBQ Pitt Masters will be offering the best of the best. Live music and fun things for the kids too! Finish off the evening with fireworks. Tickets are available for $30 for members and $35 for non-members.

Fireworks by the Bay of Sarasota: Island Park: 9PM is when the show will begin. Bring your chairs and enjoy a wonderful view of fireworks over the bay. You will be able to see the fireworks from anywhere downtown, Bayfront Park and Island Park.

Fireworks over the Manatee River: Bradenton & Palmetto: 9 PM Hosted by the City of Palmetto, you can see the fireworks from both sides of the Manatee River and downtown Bradenton. Bring your chairs to the Manatee River Walk and enjoy the view.

As soon as our kids were old enough to go alone we stopped going. As fun as people make it sound, it just wasn't, at least for me.

As far as parking goes, there are plenty of places if you are willing to walk a little. I swear, most crowds would prefer a drive in type experience.

The SPD does not come up with the parking "plan" They are put in charge of the City's dirty work.

There is always Music on Main in Lakewood Ranch on that Friday evening. There is a farmers market Saturday morning in downtown Sarasota. What are you interested in?
