For the reason its close to downtown + the area is more down to earth.
I find in most of Sarasota its snobby and more places where people have their noses up than not. If you move here, make sure your a loner type because people arent exactly as friendly as St Pete.
I had the pleasure of going over to an old friend of mine's place in Gillespie Park over the holiday weekend. He & his girlfriend live off Orange between Fruitville and Blvd. of the Arts on a dead end street. Their street was nice, their home was a beautiful old 2/2 FL cracker house built in the 20's with hardwood floors & all original. I was impressed and take this from someone who's lived in the Burns Ct. area as well as currently Hillview & Osprey. If I won lotto, I'd certainly buy in Gillespie & hold tight, the area is under gentrification and the location re: proximity to downtown is fabulous.

As far as snobby in SRQ, it's all a matter of opinion. I've been in Sarasota for three years now; I found just as much snobbery in Bradenton & Anna Maria when I lived on the island there...go figure?!

I wouldn't totally cross north of Fruitville off of your list. I live in a great development with beautifully maintained homes just north of Fruitville (albeit east of 301), and it's super convenient to downtown and to 75. Additionally, around the Meadows golf course area (17th/Gocio/Lockwood Ridge), there are some very large "Old Florida" homes with significant amounts of land. Just keep an open mind as you're searching, and look at crime rates and neighborhood stats before making a decision.

Sarasota is a great town. It has beautiful beaches, restaurants and shops. It is a small city but still has many features and benefits of larger ones. It has great theaters, museums, botanical gardens, etc. I love Sarasota.
