See thread "What is wrong with Sarasota?" - post by LeavingFL4Seasons on page 7 - excellent analysis. I could not have said it better.

Living in Florida is a lot different than living in NY, I moved here from NH where I lived for 13 years and before that I lived in Upstate NY, which of course is not like that city where transportation is readily available. Here buses only run by the hour and chances are they are a ways away from where you are or want to be, and taxis' are expensive, you need to have a car here. Thre are good schools in Sarasota County. The nearest elementary school in Venice (city south of Sarasota & bedroom community), is about 2 miles from the beach. I worked the polls in the last Primary and the Republican thing is not true. You will also need to decide whether or not you want to be in a gated community or not. Gated communities have restrictions on a lot of things (like if you can have a truck parked in your yard, whether you can leave your garage door open (unless you're driving in or out), how many cars you can have in your driveway, etc.) people think of a gated community as being more safe. Depending on how close to the water you live, you could also have the high cost of flood insurance. It's all about how you want to live and what your priorities are. Coming from NY, it'll take some getting use to. If I can be of any further help as a fellow NYer, please feel free to contact me with any further questions. I'll be more than happy to help, it's not easy moving to a new location.
