I just read where a young man died in a Sarasota traffic circle early this morning. It was at Tuttle and Siesta. He hit a tree.

That is a really nice big traffic circle that has been there for decades. The original. They should all be like that one. Sorry to hear about the accident, though.

That accident happened at 3AM. I'd be willing to bet alcohol was involved.

According to SRQ PD, 28% of traffic deaths in the County were alcohol related. When you factor in the time of day and not wearing seat belt, I'd say those 2 factors significantly increases the chances of alchohol being involved, but I prefer to wait and see. Either way, our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.

I didn't do extensive research on this but it seems their justification for traffic circles and roundabouts is that there may be MORE accidents, but very few fatal or serious accidents like you'd have at a regular intersection. Because the people going around the circle aren't going that fast and hence don't do as much damage. Really encouraging, huh?

That Siesta circle probably has 10% of the traffic (if that) as this one on 41 will have.

This - seriously - would be like building an airport runway in a circle. Someone was either paid off (or a LOT of people) or is not paying attention.

"The experience with traffic circles and rotaries in the USA was almost entirely negative, characterized by high accident rates and congestion problems. By the mid 1950s, construction of traffic circles and rotaries had ceased entirely. " (wikipedia)......

These are only used today in tiny developments and at slow speeds, etc.

It's just amazing that they picked an option - which is not even in the list of options which a traffic engineer would present.
