Yes--health care is about the strongest section of the economy
Venice Hospital I think might still be existing under a shadow (you can Google for news stories) but there are plenty of doctors/specialists, medical clinics, and hospitals in the area...

The one negative that I think most residents would agree with is that traffic, especially during "season" is the bane of most people's existence
There road design and construction have provided only two really functional N/S routes---

The older 41, running parallel to the Coast with numerous traffic lights and more numerous "turn at your own risk" crossings is under the FHP control since it is a state highway and you never see local police there -- you never see FHP unless there is a fairly serious traffic accident so there is no "police presence" to moderate traffic violators who persistently run yellow/red lights, drive TOO slow/fast, or do other violations of the law...
Because 41 runs through numerous separate areas adding a traffic light at intersection with high accident rate is about impossible...

The other is 75---the Interstate--which is more eastward--often lacks access from inside Sarasota/other towns (because growth was usually Gulf oriented) and has its own share of crazy drivers...

If you live here you can readily see the impact of the snowbirds' arrival on 41 and heave a sigh of relief when they migrate north...but over the years we have spent lengths of time here (since we stay 6-8 wks at a time usually) we have noticed that the traffic on 41 has grown heavier even during the off-season and there does seem to be strong "commuter" streams in the AM/afternoon hours which I put down to the growth of North Port and South Venice going to jobs farther north...
I can only surmise that for those drivers using 41 is a better choice because of start/stop locations than 75...
but adding more and more drivers to the mix on 41 directly downgrades all the other negatives of using 41.
People who do lot of driving know city streets and work arounds but traffic patterns definitely were not designed to deal with the population growth over past 50 yrs--which is still growing.

Plus---the water in Venice--city water--has issues...
Suggest you Google/read for articles about Venice water system/outages/problems
This is problem that has been around for some years

The City of Venice just sent out information on their water quality. They debunk many of the claims made by others, and had an independent third-party do a complete assessment of their water, facilities and staff. You're of course free to make your own conclusions, but be sure to at least keep informed if you want form an opinion. (And my use of the term "you" here isn't meant to single out loves2read.)

Every time we must drive to or through Venice we say "think god we don't live here" and we are 60-somethings not 30-somethings. But we have many friends who absolutely adore Venice, so different strokes for different folks. Never would I suggest anyone under the age of 70 move to Venice...but that's my opinion.

Venice water I mentioned because of comments seen on NextDoor when people in Venice neighborhoods have posted about water alerts-priblems
We have Sarasota city water in mine and while quality us supposedly ok I hate the taste/smell of tap water
We buy highest quality filter ($$) for our fridge and use Britta as well

We both really love the vibe of Fort Myers, but the crime rate is our biggest deterrent. Though I do see it recommended frequently here. I look at City Data and other website's crime stats and Fort Myers is ranked in the top 7% of cities for crime stats. Compared to nearby Cape Coral, Fort Myers seems extremely crime ridden. I wish that weren't the case as we love the area.

Crime comes in various categories and locations--
Not every area of every city has same type or number of crimes
Murder rate, rape (especially during burglary/robbery), kidnapping, burglary would worry me more than domestic violence (because my spouse isn't violent), identity theft, stolen credit cards, vandalism, cruelty to animals, arson

High crime rate could mean Baltimore murders or something less deadly

I am not personally familiar with Ft. Myers, but I have been on these forums for a decade, and the crime comes up over and over. So I am thinking there must be something to it. I would not mention this if it were the opinion/observation of one or two people but there have been many. Anyway, just throwing that out there.

In TX police depts post crime maps online so you can search timelines and for specific types of crimes
Haven't looked around online to see if they are available for SRQ areas or Ft Myers...but you could certainly look...

Lots of oldsters in Venice but they do have a good high school here. I used to see some 30 year old age group men and women at my gym but most of the people here are in the 65 plus age group. Sarasota would be better for you.

We are quite similar, except for jobs. We are late 20s almost 30s. No kids. Moved down a year and a half ago. We considered Cape Coral but then decided against it. We love Venice, are there most of the time but due to housing costs, we got a great deal in North Port and took it. Close to 75 so easy to get around. We love going to the beaches and all the festivals and activities Venice offers. We like antique and thrift shopping so we go up to Sarasota or down to Ft Myers now and then. We love Sarasota overall to and up into Bradenton. Lots more adminities there you probably looking for. We don't mind driving a little further though. There are bars down this area however to. Both Venice and North Port is pretty safe.

Only issue is how far it is from your work. I personally would choose Venice over Cape Coral but the commute, for me at least, would be rough. Port Charlotte would get you closer to work though and less commute time. Though it's not nearly as nice at Venice IMO.

Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions for me! We are originally from Ohio. No regrets moving to where we did.
