Beaches and swamp. All of south Florida is swampland. Beauty is where you find it, though. The Everglades are spectacular.

Actually the Myakka State Forest is on the boarder of Venice and North Port. This forest is 8,593 square miles. You can canoe, bike, horse back ride or just hike the many trails. Just a few miles north of Venice, in Osprey is Oscar Scherer State Park.

I think it has the best of both worlds-nice weather, great beaches and and beautiful state parks.

Both Myakka and Oscar Scherer are nice parks, but they are not what one thinks of as "forest." In fact, they are described as "scrubby flatwoods" and that is what they are. They are still beautiful, but what you have are tall pines with a lot of that palmetto undergrowth you see in Florida, and more of a "swamp" look.

I worked a seasonal job one year at Myakka - I had a great time, met a lot of nice people and saw some incredible wildlife there. The airboat rides are lots of fun and when you go out on the river you see tons and tons of gators!

Venice is humid. Don't let anyone fool you....there's forest as well as beaches and sand, but I wouldn't be caught dead in there at this time with the heat and bugs.
