Simply Amazing...someone gets convicted for driving while intoxicated...their insurance goes up...their driver's license maybe suspended...they receive a finincial fine...and everyone agrees that they deserve it...
Now they want to install red light cameras at various intersections...and I agree it is to collect money...not to stop accidents or anything else...just purely a dollar decision...and almost everyone is against it...well, considering that most accidents occur within 25 miles of your residence...and most of them are at intersections...I would think that anyone involved in an accident that did not go through the red light would love to have the camera's available to prove their point...but that is just my opinion...
Where I live...Rockland County - NY...I wish that they would install the red light camera's at every main intersection...for they would get 5 to 10 vehicles at every change of the light...during the day time hours...just imagine...$50 per vehicle...times several hundred to thousand a day...the only problem...where does the money collected go...perhaps we should worry more about that...then worry about someone who has to pay the fine....

penalties
FL legislature didn't pass red light camera law in the last session, so municipalities cannot put the fee on the next time you try to register the car. the auto registration is a State tax, not a local tax. Red light cameras are illegal as far as the State is concerned.

the legislature didn't pass this law in May because of disagreement over money. everybody wanted their piece. there was no discussion about safety, or saving lives or citizen review of the program, it was nothing but we get this much, you get this much. disgusting.

In most jurisdictions, over 90% of tickets are for rolling right on red. And pretty much everyone that turns right on red will get a ticket. Duncanville, Tx, pop 33,000 sent out 44,000 red light tickets from only four cameras. 96% were right on red.

The cameras take photos. They are not moving videos. When you make a right on red, the camera can't tell the difference between rolling through the red or if you were stopped. Only that you went over the trip line when the light was red. Don't make a right turn on red at a camera location.

Good point, and if you do you better hope the light on your turn signal is lit for the milasecond that the camera is shooting.

In an editorial, the Herald Tribune Sat 7/11 endorsed the installation of red light cameras in the city limits of Sarasota.
They state that cameras reduce red light running violations by 40 to 50% and crashes by 25 to 30%. What they neglected to report is the studies showing that rear end collisions double at camera locations.
They also report that test cameras at Jacaranda/Commercial and Lockwood Ridge/17th St identified 900 violations in 3 months. Can these numbers be valid since many in the media have reported that camera installation companies reduce the 'yellow' time to boost numbers. And the numbers didn't identify the amounts by 'seconds' of the violations. Were the very large majority of violations the run of the mill 'beat the light by one or two seconds with no cross traffic' or were there 'the 5 second, 10 second, 20 second I didn't realize the red light, with cross traffic' type where there is an opportunity for a crash. By the way, the Federal traffic people have suggested that if one second is added to the 'yellow' time, red light running is reduced by 90% But we know that's not going to happen. It's all about the money. All they need is 2 violations a day [$7500 a month] at one camera to pay expenses and make money.

just one more way to restrict travel and bring in money for them. I'm going to shamrock and 41 on the 16th of July, this Thursday, between 3 and 5 to protest the unconstitutional FHP roadblock. Bring your Bagdad is that way, signs and cameras.
