I've never even attempted to use a fly rod so I can't help you with what fly to use, but if you're fishing from the beach just watch for birds diving or bait being nervous. I also look for deeper pools that form inside sand bars.
I'd look to the southern tip of the island, or the pass between sanibel and captiva. I like the time when the tide just starts to go out.
good luck

The only place I've seen people fly casting from the beach is in Montuk during stripper season. Some people fly fish from boats then as well when they cast into a feeding blitz. Invigorating experience.

Ha ha, typo, striper (not stripper), stripers in MD are striped bass, we normally call them Rockfish here - good eating. LOL good catch.

There is good flyfishing here in the summer right at the edge of the shore of the gulf, when the snook are chasing bait. You can also flyfish the flats for tailing reds. I never understood the desire to flyfish from a boat. But then again a 200 pound tarpon on a 10wt would be a blast. I cant wait for a little warmer weather. Me and the wife both took our fly rods out on the kayak this past Monday, but there were no real opportunities to use them.

Capt. Rick Grasset at CB's Outfitters in Sarasota is a fly fishing guide. If you can only cast 30 feet, then you should contact him.
