Moving to Sarasota looking purchase a house in 800,000-1,000,000 range. Where would you spend your money? Concidering resale value prox. to beaches and meeting some nice people. Like the downtown vibe but struggling to give up all the house you get @ Univ.Park and Lakewood Ranch. Looking for opinions from locals who live in one or other. Any specific information would be great.

The person that probably knows more than anyone about property in Sarasota is SoFLGal! She is also a real estate agent, that I recommend. Where are you from?

Personally, I prefer the downtown area but it all depends on what is most important to you. What kind of things do you like to do? golfing, boating, going to the beaches, eating out at restaurants? Do you like more of a country club atmosphere or an eclectic vibe? How about schools, do you have school age children?

For more of the country club/golf feel you might want to look into The Concession in Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch-The Lake Club or Polo Club, The Founders Club, Gator Creek estates (which has homes on acreage), Laurel Oak Country Club and Prestancia. A little further south in Osprey is The Oaks which is also worth a look. All of these community have an activities director that will keep your schedule full. If you prefer a newer, modern home you would prefer living in these areas.

If your going for more of the walkability and eclectic vibe then you would want to check out Aqualane Estates, Bayview, Cherokee Park, Harbor Acres, McClellan Park and Oyster Bay. These communities would all be very close to the downtown areas, beaches, and a wide array of restaurants. Many of the homes in these areas are historic and built in the 1920's.

Both have a very different feel to them and both areas have big positives and not many negatives. I think it depends on which area appeals more to you. Both areas will be very good for resale do to the high demand for property in those areas. One way you can stay ahead of the game is to scout out foreclosures in each area. They are usually priced below market value.

Once you narrow it down to a specific neighborhood I can give you more info that might help in your decision.

I know Ladywithafan lives downtown and might be able to chime in a give an opinion.

I was born and raised in SW Florida. I live in Sarasota county now and have lived here as a kid as well-I absolutely love it here!

Its all personal preference I suppose. I, myself would love to get something on the bay (maybe possible) or gulf (unlikely) anywhere in Sarasota County. Or a good access canal front home.

With your budget, I'd buy downtown....It's like waterfront...there's only so much....great time to buy a home downtown.

If it were me, I would look for something south of downtown and West of the Trail, or even up in the Ringling Museum area. These neighborhoods remain the most sought after in every economy and you will be close to everything.

If I had that budget, I would get something near St. Armand's Circle & Lido Beach. Walk to restaurants and the beach!
