Yup there sure are. The most common crabs you'll see are blue crabs and stone crabs. You can catch blues and stones in a crab trap or with a chicken wing.

When I was a kid we used to go out to the beach at night. You need a five gallon bucket, Q-beam light, dip net and piece of chicken on a string. Just drag the chicken a long the bottom slowly and the crabs will come running. Then the other person with you can just scoop them up.

The other alternative way is to just throw a trap out with some meat in it. The above way is much more exciting though

Keep in mind with the stone crabs you only break one claw off and then throw them back, they'll grow another one. I do believe there is a limit on the number of claws as well.

Amazing! I don't believe that you know that much about fishing and crabbing! I hope you have taken your kids out to do that with you! What an experience!

I'd like to add, that in Punta Gorda there is a seafood store and restaurant called Peace River Seafood. I think it is on Olympia just outside of town before you get to Rt75. It is a nice seafood store, and they serve both stone crabs and blue crabs steamed. I haven't tried to see if they really get them right, like in Maryland, but there were some people there from Annapolis that were enjoying them! I had some oysters and Stone Crab Claws - they were very good! I've only barely tried them before, being from MD we predominately choose Blue Crabs.

Might have to try some "crabbing" as well as fishing..... sounds like a lot of fun (never mind the "feast").

Hey, SoFlGal....
Checking out the "aeriall" shot you sent...it may not have been the Regina wreck we saw after all?
The aerial shot showing the location of the wreck, appears to be sort of straight out from the area of the intersection of Cortez Road and Gulf Drive (?).....
Anyway, the aerial appears to show the restaurant right on the beach....also, I don't see the rotary (or, as I believe they call them down here....."roundabouts"....lol)

We were actually about mid way on Coquina Beach when I saw all the boats out about a couple of hundred yards, fishing.
This probably isn't the Regina wreck?

Will check it all out when we get back there next week.....can't wait!!

Coquina Beach would be to far south. The Regina wreck is located directly out from SeaTrek Dive Shop on Bradenton Beach. Here's a MapQuest of the location:

You could rent a boat-CB Outfitters has been around a while and they're out on Siesta. Or you could go out with a fishing guide which I mentioned in a previous post. Capt. Burgess (http://www.fishinglongboatkey.com/index.html - broken link)would probably be your best bet if your up in the Siesta area. He's out of Longboat, just north of Siesta.

Or you could convince a friend with a boat to take you
