Recommendation for Home Watch Person on Venice Island (Sarasota: how much, house)

Hi everyone,

I'd like to find a person or service to check on my house on the island of Venice during the off season. (Thank you to city-data and Janet2007 for making me aware that these people exist!) I called the Venice Police Department to see if they have any recommendations, and they don't.

I can't afford anything extravagent and only need the person to swing by every other or third week or so to make sure there's no junk mail, the air conditioner hasn't stopped working, martians haven't stolen the house, etc. There isn't any lawn work to be done so maintenance is minimal.

Has anyone hired any of these people or services? Can you recommend one? How much do they cost and what do they do? How do you ensure they're not going to run a drug ring out of your place? I'd like to develop a good relationship with a person who is reliable, honest and needs the money. It's a little scary, though, turning over the house key to someone you don't know. However, not having anyone to check on the place is causing me tons of stress.

(I pushed the limits of my budget in a big way to by this place so my parents, who could never afford to go to Florida on their own, will get out of WV in the winter. Although my goal was to add some years to their lives, I think I'm taking a few off of mine! )

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I would almost say my daughter could do it--but she is busy with her own life
maybe the person who made the comment about hers found that person through her church--maybe she will give you some recommendations...

You might check out a company called residencecheckofsarasota.com, who says they do this sort of thing. Owned by former law enforcement officers, who are pictured on the web site. I'd ask for referrals and see what they charge. I just found it by Googling around a bit. Good luck! Let us know how make out.

Also they will get your home ready for your parents to arrive in the winter. Your peace of mind is their priority.

I am usually on the TX boards and we are having a terrible influx of people who are self-employed and posting ads for their services to get work with the economy slowing down...
