Canal Living
I have a question regarding canal living. Do the boats going by cause a lot of noise in the area. Just wondering if noise pollution would be a reason for concern living on the canal. I know BigHouse could chime in here and give an accurate answer. Are pets a problem with people living on the canal with the lots being rather small? I am really interested in canal living but my husband has reservations about the negatives such as smaller lots, the noise, the extra taxes in a flood zone, but I think I would love it. If anyone can give some insight on canal living I would love to hear from you.

*shakes finger at FLBob for trying to sell the OP a house*
I lived on a canal in North Port for 8+ years. My house was at the end of the waterway, so boats rarely came that far down. My neighbors rarely used their boats. I was not on a deep water canal.
My canal was tidal and sometimes at low tide the view was not spectacular.
I had both dogs & cats and never had a problem with them wanting to get into the water. In all the years I lived there I saw maybe 3 alligators. One of them hung around for a few months, but it was small and never bothered anyone.

Noise is noise. If a boat with large engines comes by your backyard, then, yes, you'll hear noise.
There is also a difference in living at the end of a canal than the opening.
Canals also tend to attract bugs.
Deep water is a plus, especially with the drought situation in Florida. You might find yourself unable to use your boat due to low tide situation so it's good to see the property at low vs. high tide.
Canals can smell.
Never heard of pet problems on canal.
Check out the condition of the seawall. If it's in disrepair or ready to go, it can easily be upwards of $500 a running foot to repair.

The canals and the seawalls in PGI and BSI are maintained by the city of Punta Gorda. The cost of that maintenance is included in your tax bill.

WOW!!! That's cool. When we had to replace seawall in Holmes Beach it was upwards of $50K.

Wow, I didn't think canals would smell. Do you mean like low tide?? I didn't expect that but I guess that's possible. Thanks for the input.

That's one of the very nice things about Punta Gorda Isles. several years ago we had a very low tide coupled with heavy rains and miles of seawalls blew out. Now it did take time but all the seawalls were repaired.

The biggest downside to living on a canal is the fact that no one builds a privacy fence or landscape barrier, so your neighbors lanai is viewable/hearable from your lanai. you share a common view of the water. Most of the people I know that purchased in PGI and live on the water love it with very few complaints.
If you want water but don't want to live on a canal, I know of a beautiful riverfront home, 3/2 pool and dock, with a fantastic wide water view, priced under $370k.

I have seen the pictures of the inside of that home and it is beautiful and the view is magnificent, but I believe that home is in Port Charlotte and not wanting to go there. Thank you though for thinking of me

I couldn't have put it any better!
Sometimes I think I must have a different way of looking at the world than most people, since I am such a light sleeper.
Some people leave very early in the morning to go fishing. Still, I thought living on a canal was very peaceful, except for the occasional engine noise. I only rented for a few months - once in Naples and once in Tavernier.

You forgot to mention rats. Oh, and then there is always the possibility that you will forget you live on a canal and fall in.

Someone please tell me that I'm not going to see rats? Please? Lie to me if you must? j/k. I won't be living on a canal, but on Lemon Bay and I have a sea wall. Rats would freak me out in a major way. Those and the blue land crabs! Has anyone ever seen those? I've only seen them on TV and it was in Northern Fl.
Reality check... seriously be honest so I can be prepared.
BTW, I'm coming over your way today for a couple days to hang out w/ my family for the holiday. Looks like lovely weather!
