So gulf gate doesn't sound that bad......but is it kid friendly? How far of a drive is it to Siesta Key? Thanks everyone for your help, we are coming up this weekend and looking around.

It's about 4 miles or 8 minutes from Gulf Gate Dr to mid Siesta Key.

I can't seem to find posts on areas to stay away from when we start looking this next weekend. A little about us.....we want to live near the beach, and have a 2 1/2 year old girl. I am an RN and my husband works from home. We will rent for the first year and want to live in a house (have a big dog). We would like to spend around $1500 a month. There are a lot of homes for rent in Palmer Ranch and Gulf Gate which seem close to the beach, but I haven't seen any mention of Gulf gate, so any information on areas would be great! Also, what about N. Sarasota? We are so excited!!!!!!! Thank you!
If I were you I would look at West of Trail (west of 41) between Siesta Dr and Mound St, zip code 34239. This is where we currently live and rent a home. There are many houses with fenced yards available for rent in the range of $1200 to $1600 a month.

This is a very nice neighborhood with sidewalks and trees galore. Like you we have a dog and walk the neighborhood morning and evening. You are right at the bay so you get a wonderful bay breeze that keeps the temperatures very comfortable.

We are 15 minutes tops from our driveway to having our toes in the sand at Siesta Key or 10 minutes to having our toes in the sand at Lido beach. Main St is less than 10 minutes away. We bicycle downtown and to Bayfront Park regularly and often walk to Main St (about a 30 minute stroll each way).

While you can check on Craigslist, you are better off driving through the neighborhood street by street to spot For Rent signs. Now that the snowbirds have gone for the season, there are several decent houses for rent.

Google map this address: 1924 S Osprey Ave Sarasota FL 34239 to see the neighborhood I am referring to.

Trust me on this - the location is one of the best in Sarasota and is in a safe neighborhood.

Hope this helps,

Joe

I agree with this. IMO, a MUCH better location than Gulf Gate, in every way. If one can get a rental here in your price range, that is great. Anyone wanting to buy here, however, the area is extremely expensive.

Good luck!

Yeah the 34239 zip is my favorite area in Sarasota. I'm not much for the model home look but I much prefer the older homes that each look different and have their own charm. This neighborhood has plenty homes like this.

I rented a home over on Pomelo Ave as a teenager and it was a pretty cool area. It was kind of before it was cool to be in that neighborhood.

My kids have many friends that live in this area over around Citrus Ave.

Anyway, I would also agree. If you're going to rent look in the McClellan Park, Harbor Acres, Bayview, Cherokee Park, San Remo, Desoto Park, Poinsettia Park, Granada. Although not as unique a neighborhood, South Gate also falls into this zip.

And for you XMetal, this area is west of US 41 and located around the Sarasota Memorial Hospital. West of the trail up to south of Marina Jack's and the downtown area. Then down as far south as Bee Ridge Rd.

So, if you're drawing a square you go west of US41, north to Marina Jack's and south to Bee Ridge Rd. That's probably clear as mud.

Hope this helps!

34239 is also one of the areas I have been interested in renting a house. I have been searching Craigslist and realtor.com for a couple of months and have not had much luck finding places that will accept 2 large dogs and that has a fenced yard. Is really the best way to drive through the area to spot For Rent signs?? Or is there a rental agent I can contact? I am looking to rent in Sarasota before I decide to buy.

I currently live on the spacecoast and will drive over if I can get some leads. I am in a time crunch since my lease here expires the end of June. Looking to spend between $1100 and $1500 per month, and I'd like to be zoned for either Southside elementary (or Ashton in the 34233 zip code) as I have twins who will start Kindergarten. Trying to rent a house near a good school, that will take dogs, that is safe, and has a fenced yard has been difficult. My "must have" list has been hard to fill. If anyone has any contacts or rental agent, please share...as this renting thing is very stressful.

Since 34239 is a hot area to live in I would say Whitesandbeachbum is on track. Logic would tell you that many people would be doing the same thing and the owners of the property wouldn't have to do much advertising since it's a more desirable area.

twindolls-It's going to be a bit more difficult for you to do this because of the dogs. You'll have to get out and look at each property to see if the yard is fenced and then call and ask if pets are allowed.

I just did a search in the MLS of rental properties in the 34239 zip and came up with 38 matches. Also a few with fenced yards. I don't do rentals personally but I do have a pretty good rental agent up that way that could probably give you some help. I'll DM you her info.

I took a 10 minute drive and found these three houses for rent that have fully fenced yards:

1717 Hillview - asking $1250/mo
1222 Pomelo - no rental price
1815 Grove - no rental price

I have no idea if they allow renters to have dogs, but based on my experience they probably will, especially with the current market conditions. Based on having rented in this neighborhood for the past two years, the rental prices of the ones above should be in the $1200 to $1500/mo range.

If you take about two hours driving every street in this section of Sarasota, my guess is that you'll find several other choices.

Hope this helps,

Joe

Totally right on! This is where I just moved and I love it! Beautiful neighborhood, walkable, and close to both beaches

Yes, this helps a lot. Thank you for taking the time to check it out. I appreciate everyone's tips and leads to find a rental in the good areas. Even in my own neighborhood I see many For Rent signs on front lawns but NO advertising on these very nice houses in a great neighborhood. It's a little frustrating to do long distance. I will need to make the trip and check it out within the next few weeks.
