Is it uncommon for homes in the area to have an extra garage/pole shed/work shop?
Just wondering where someone might have to look in the area to purchase a home that has an extra garage or out building that might me used to store and work on classic cars, motorcycles, etc. My husband would really like to have the extra space, but I have not come across any listings with such an option. We're still in the very early stages of looking, but wondering how common or uncommon a home would be with this option and what areas would be more likely to offer it? There are other things we want in a home, so I'm sure if we couldn't find something to fit all of our needs, this one would be the first to go, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks for any information you can offer!!!

Obviously you would not probably be looking in a deed restricted community. You're best bet would be to look at places that have some acreage. Those areas are the most likely area to have an out building, extra garage, etc. I'm not sure exactly what area you are looking at but a few ideas are: Englewood Farm Acres, North Port Estates, Venice Farms, Desoto Acres, Prairie Creek, Mission Valley, etc
I just did a search in Charlotte and Sarasota counties for any home with a detached garage and came up with 259 matches. I didn't put anything in for square footage, year built, etc. So, that would narrow it down.
I've shown some pretty cool ones lately in some of these areas. But to answer your question, No , they are not that common.

Where can you do a search like that?

Well, since I'm a Realtor we have access to different search criteria. Although I believe that all the things that we can search by should be available to the public not everyone agrees with my point of view. The only way you'd be able to do it is to have a Realtor put you on a search and then the computer would automatically send you listings but you would not be able to search this way.

SoFLGal you are so helpful!!!! Thanks so much for the information. Like I said, at this point we are still in the very early stages of looking, but when we're ready to make the move we may have to look you up. You are so knowledgeable! Thanks again.

we will sell you ours - ha ha
We have a 3/2 house with 2 car garage with pool AND Large 2 car + office building. We bought in So. Venice and bought 2 house lots (they call it 4 lots) with intention of building that garage we have now. My Toy shop for motorcycles and cars. Also have more room for that boat I want and we are down the street from the intercoastal and boat ramp & ferry. I don't think we can beat it but it is a non deed-restricted area and that has it's good and bad points.
You can buy a home you like and have one built. We used a local contractor that specializes in "the florida basement" as they call it. They do great work and matched the house. You will have to be in non deed-restricted area like So. Venice. You could get a steel building also. You may be able to find what you want but it may be easier to find the home with some extra land. I have seen some homes that had an empy lot behind or next to that would also work.

If you do not find what you are looking for, why not build a garage or workshop? Of course you will need the extra land, but any time we build dettached garages they are very customized to fit each individuals criteria.

This question has come to mind for me also. In New York,if you need more space to store your home maintenance equipment,(ie: lawn mower. ladders, weedwhacker, power washer, etc.)and you do'nt want to clutter up your garage, you put up a shed or storage building in your backyard. Now as I'm driving around in my lovely new neighborhood in Englewood,I really do'nt see too many storage buildings around, even in the non-deedrestricted areas where the people have room to put one in. Why is this? Is it frowned upon for aesthetic reasons, or does it maybe have to do with possible hurricane reasons,or county government restrictions,or what ? Because I would like to put up a small shed for the afore-mentioned reasons .

There are quite a few where I live in North Port. For the reason of Hurricanes, the shed companies still have to follow the guidelines of 130 mph code. They usually use metal strap method. Actually after Charley hit the shed business and POD biz were booming.
