I too just came across this thread! I am fairly new here, but I've been coming from time to time to read through posts etc. I was happy to come across your story, as it has some familar feelings in it. The difference is I am Canadian. I have been coming to Florida since I was a child on holiday nearly every year. When I got older, that tapered off. But I met my husband in 2000 and he had never been to FL before, so he couldn't undstand my passion of LOVING Florida. But we were married on Anna Maria Island in May 2009 and spend 2 weeks driving between Tampa, Bradenton, Anna Maria Island and Orlando. The minute he stepped foot in Florida he fell in love too. But for us it's even harder to just pick up and move. Plus I totally understand the part about your families not liking the idea so much.
Can't wait to hear your updates though, I'll be around!

You all have been so awesome to post alongside and I can tell a few of you know EXACTLY where I'm at in this process.
I've spent some time each day working on my house for months now. The rains came this week and is remaining on and off, finally.... I'm currently touching up waterstains on woodwork around doors and windows, my wife has been fixing those annoying little paint splotches we've left from years of improperly taping off our trim. The light fixtures are dusted, the storage locker is being reserved and we're starting to pack and stage each room. Shooting for going to market July 1st. I've had a feeling for a very long time that my place will sell quickly. My neighborhood has several others preparing to list this summer too (I still feel I have the best house on the block).

I have been doing the same thing here at my house in Western New York in preparation for the big move to Fla. We bought a place last year and expected to just rent it out for the next couple years , but I now have the opportunity to take an early retirement, and we are rushing to catch up on the home repair fix-ups that I let slide for the last few years and get the place sale-ready. Hopefully we will be able to sell here and be down by the end of the year! Good luck with everything, and I hope we'll both be Floridians very soon!

Alright everybody - I actually have another question instead of just posting about my recent events all the time... but I need to preface first. I am booking a storage locker locally to get all my stuff out of my house including things like my deep freeze (so it's not even a temptation for the new buyers). I've found a great deal here for like $36 for 5x10 space per month. It's not climate controlled but it's been a cool enough summer to not need it... plenty of room to declutter....
But I've started thinking about the transportation and unload in FL... When I get down there I may not have a house to deliver to because I've been advised by so many already to just rent and take my time...
What is storage going for in northern Sarasota and do any of you know of a decent place to recommend from your own experience?

Money from the sale, FUNNY! Like everyone selling now, we lost money. But, making up for it buying down there. We have a septic problem with the new house and the selling bank doesn't want to budge on the price or fix the problem, so that saga is TBC.....

I've enjoyed reading this thread. I, like some others, are basically a carbon copy of you. Stuck in the cold all your life, go to Sarasota and suddenly realize how different life could be.
Our friends live there and after just a few trips it hits you between the eyes. They moved recently, totally uprooted everything, shoved in the cars, had no jobs lined up and now are ridiculously happy. We saw them a couple weeks ago, and even though they were "home" they were pretty much tired of everything and wanted to go back to Sarasota after 2 days.
I'm at the super frustrating point of having the house up for sale, having quite a lot of activity, but not knowing when we can do something on the FL end. Even worse is I found a house that just came on the market today that is darn near close to perfect for us. Oh to have unlimited funds!
Best of luck to everyone else here!

Although I can relate to exactly what you are all saying, we DID have the FL experience and loved it. We were in NY and had 3 children ages 1, 3, 5 and DH came home one night and said his company wanted to offer him a transfer to FL (east coast). That was 20 years ago. We loved every single minute. We were there 7 years and the company decided overnight to close its doors down there and we were either unemployed or had to come back to NY. DH looked and looked, but no job for us. I was a stay-at-home mom, so we really had no choice but to return. We raised our kids here, they got a terrific education, and family is nearby (more or less). We want so desparately to come back to FL. All 3 children are raised and moved away because of the high cost of living here. One is in northern NY State, one in VT, and one is in the service. And now I work FT, but truthfully, DH has a good job. We feel so stuck. But, we are always looking for homes and areas and are sure Sarasota is the place for us. Like it much more that the east coast. We still have lots of friends there and visit a couple of times a year. I HATE spending even a penny in my current home, even though I know it'll increase its value...I want to put that $$ into my FL home!!
So, yes, I can relate~

AAAaaagghh!!!! Things are picking up speed now!! It's hard to keep up!
Yesterday I was mowing the lawn (it's become a jungle from all this recent rain) and my wife stepped out onto the deck and did a little dance because we received word that our bathroom countertop is in at the home center to pickup!
Guess I know what I'm doing for Father's Day weekend.
(If any of you are not yet aware, this was supposed to be the last thing we were to do before going to market and the counter is now ready for us way earlier than expected) aaaagh!!!!
I still have a house to clean, declutter, stage & list before the 1st! And I just received word of a couple more job options in Sarasota!!! aaagghh!! how am I going to do it all in time??? then there's pictures to take and furniture to reposition and kids to control and rum to buy.....
Please let me know about any storage experiences from my previous post.
