The whole house filter is usually just a large cartridge filter that is mounted in line somewhere close to where the water supply enters the house.

But I thought a whole house filter cost several thousand dollars? Is this the same system that usually costs that much?

It's installed before the water tank, a large filter app. 20 inches in length with a shut off valve before it.
Probably work even better if it was installed after the water tank. Just my thinking.

Whole house RO would cost several thousand. This is just a regular cartridge filter. It act's as a pre-filter for the under sink RO, as well as filtering the water that enters the appliances, showers, etc.

If you put it after the tank you'd need one for hot and cold. You would also end up with all of the stuff that the filter catches in the tank itself.

I'm sure the whole house is just a standard charcoal. Under sink RO is really cheap even with the $50. MOL for a plumber.
5 STAGE HOME REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEM - RO WATER FILTER (Disclaimer: I have no stake in it.)

Interesting I wonder what the difference in water quality is between the filter one and the one that costs thousands of dollars? Isn't the above just the under the sink RO system that feeds that one little spigot?

Yes. Why would you want a whole house RO? Way overkill. You don't need RO for laundry or toilet for eg.

How do you like living in NP? I'm considering buying there or Port C.

I like NP. It's a nice little town and there are some great deals in houses right now. It's fairly close to the beaches, shopping, has good schools, etc. If I had quite a bit more money I'd choose to live in the downtown Sarasota area or maybe on Siesta. But for what you get NP is a pretty decent little town.

I wonder if there's something I could get just for the shower/bath to improve the water. That's the only thing I don't like about well water is the way it feels on your hair.

Sure, you can get a simple shower filter that fits between the spout & shower head. Amazon.com: shower filter I have the Aquasana. It works well.
