Hi, I can't find anything newer than 2007 either. But also, I wonder if they are talking about strictly the city limits, or the parts of Sarasota to the south that are still part of the area but not in the city limits? Also, is the 50-something thousand population including part time residents, or year round - population swells in the season here.

For the city limits, its closer to 52k or so. Its all built out, so only changes in density really change the population. The city also has zero chance of successfully annexing anything significant.
Most of the population of "Sarasota" live in unincorporated areas outside of the city limit. CDPs such as Bee Ridge, Desoto Lakes. Fruitville, Gulf Gate estates, Kensignton Park, Lake Sarasota, North Sarasota, Ridge Wood Heights, Sarasota Springs, Siesta Key, South Gate Ridge, South Sarasota, Southgate, Meadows, and Vamo. They all have Sarasota addresses.
Also, southern Manatee County up to a certain point has a Sarasota address.

Thanks for the information, so based on there having Sarasota addresses do City ordinances apply to those locations or only within city limits?

I agree, I live downtown and with all the empty condos and houses I would think that 52,000 is right on or a bit high even; definetly not growing much anymore and residents seem to be leaving...the school district reported much less students enrolling in school and that was last year and it has probably gotten worse this year.

Sarasota city and county are seperate political entities with different municipal services, ordinances, etc.

That's pretty much what we figured, since they are unincorporated areas of the county they pretty much would be counted more as county population which is much greater than the city population.

Someone on the Ft Myers forum yesterday asked me to compare Naples to Sarasota. Since I've only vacationed there, I said I really can't do that (very different from living in a city) Anyway, I was really surprised to see this thread today since, coincidentally, I tried finding this info yesterday. It was interesting to learn that Sarasota has approx 145% more residents than Naples, if the estimates are reliable.
Anyway, city-data shows the median price for a home in Naples as of 2007 to be $1,004,594 and Sarasota $212,027. By now I'm sure these prices are 30 to 40% lower. A competitive site estimates the Naples median house/condo price in 2009 to be $640K and Sarasota to be $173K.
Why such a big gap? Is it because there is more housing in Sarasota and more middle class neighborhoods?
One more thing....I've always thought of Sarasota as being a retirement community like Naples, but the stats show the average age in Naples is 62 and Sarasota 41. Big difference as well.

Well. You are just comparing the two city populations. Like Sarasota, Naples has much of their population living outside of the city limits. So you are comparing just a small portion of their populations.
Its probably more useful to compare Collier County vs Sarasota County, if you want to talk about average age or home price. In general, 'Sarasota' is younger than Venice and Englewood, but older than North Port.
