You can also get what they call Sand Grabbers. There are several different styles of these devices made out of PVC or Metal. We prefer the metal ones as they are more durable and preform better. These sand Grabbers will have a coil like a spring or cork screw that dig into the sand and will hold your umbrella in place during those windy days. Cost of the sand grabbers are around $7-$8 bucks at Wal-Mart. Well worth the investment.

We bought ours last September at Wal-Mart in Venice. North Port Wal-Mart did not have much as far as beach stuff at the time. You have 3 Wal-Marts Port Charlotte, North Port or Venice with in 30 mins of each other, to our surprise stock and prices differ from store to store.
I never knew about the sand grabber. That would be a great idea. I usually just push the pole down in the sand about 2 feet! It is a lot of work, but I'm pretty big and persistant. A sand grabber is a good idea.

Thanks,

Hey BigHouse,
Thought those sand grabbers were a good idea after reading this thread. Went to Target in Venice today and found some that are made from PVC and were $14.95. No metal ones. Only a few left. Good luck.

Hey Topdog,
I won't need 'em till I come back down in October, but I will definitely scout some out and buy a pair of them when I get ready to visit the beach again.
Thanks for the update!

Yeah I didn't know about them either. I've always tried the same approach and you really feel like you deserve that time at the beach when you're done. Then the wind comes along and let's you know you didn't get it deep enough... and there's the ole' Buccaneer running down the beach again after a gigantic blue umbrella... and when you catch it you feel like you're trying to parasail or something....and your wife doesn't help make it any easier when you return exhausted and she's gasping for air between peals of laughter....

and now I learn there's thing little thingy called a sandgrabber???
Life will finally be like a Corona commercial again!!!

Ok just went to Sharkeys the other day thanks to your suggestions.

Wife & I had some good mom & dad time with kids in school.

Food was o.k & scenery was cool. Wait staff was good, prices were a bit high for the food quality, but overall it was a very nice day away......
