Well I can't really comment on the neighborhood as far as safety but I would tell you to visit the neighborhood after 5 when everyone is out of school and work. Talk to the police department and pick up the newspaper and look at the police beat and see if that neighborhood is mentioned a lot.
I had a foreclosure over on Sheehan Blvd, which is the next street over from Alton. It sold a few months back. Newbury is farther down and closer to US41 and located very close to Buffalo Lake and it's also pretty close to the PC Golf Club.
The canals over there do not go out since they are on the east side of US 41. You could go up and down them in a small jon boat but you're not gonna be able to run anything very big in them. You'll mostly be catching bass. Many people like to be on the canals over there just as something peacful to look at, run a small boat up and down or snag a few fish out of.
