It isn't exactly a gated community. You will find dilapidated homes, crime, etc. in that area. Some people will advise you to live in a tonier neighborhood. It's really up to you and what you can accept...I had people ask me if I wanted to buy drugs while walking through the area, but they didn't press me when I declined.

We looked at some houses in Bayshore Gardens. We did not choose to make any offers.

Look at the areas a bit more NW, I've driven through a few of them and they are really nice.

Bayshore Gardens was originally a little 1950's development set on the bay for mostly northern retirees. Homes are mostly from 50's and 60's, small concrete block, and inexpensive. It used to be a nice area, but has suffered greatly in this economy - many foreclosures and homes in disrepair, as well as undesirable elements moving in. My realtor advised us against buying there last year. We bought in Whitfield Estates, a mile to the south and just love it here.
The pros of Bayshore Gardens are, great location you are near the water and close to everything, and properties are cheap. But you have to weigh the negatives I mentioned above.

I would advise AGAINST Bayshore Gardens. There is a lot of crime and drugs in Bayshore Gardens. There are other areas in Manatee County that you might be interested in, but it's not Bayshore Gardens.
