Laurel is so small many people just include it with the town of Nokomis. The other area you are referring to is the subdivision of Mobile City.

So is all of Laurel Rd. technically Laurel, FL then? Sorry, when I said Laurel, I meant Laurel Rd. not Laurel the town. Maybe it's doesn't make a difference.... Your right, Laurel (the town) is such a spot in the road, it seems to just blend with Nokomis. Don't people who live in Laurel have a Nokomis address though? I know the Laurel Park is in Nokomis though off Collins Rd.
It's all rather confusing!

Yeah it does get really confusing. Basically the town of Laurel is right behind the post office on Laurel Rd. The town is only 6 square miles and has less than 9K people in it. It's only been in the last 15 years or so that I have seen Laurel and Nokomis being interchanged. I think the post office is still even a bit confused where Laurel is exactly. They are now giving it a Nokomis address and still calling it Laurel. Go figure Laurel, Florida - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Then to make it even more confusing you have Laurel Park in downtown Sarasota, which has nothing to do with the town called Laurel in the same county. Good thinking Sarasota county

Lyons Bay would be Nokomis. The some of the streets that are in Laurel are:
Old Trail, Browns Rd, Chandler, Collins, Forest, Church, Citrus, Scott, Patton, Tangerine. The area right around Laurel Park. It's basically behind the SunTrust bank (the silver one that looks like a spaceship) on the corner of Tamiami Tr and Laurel, the Laurel post office is right there too. The area to the rear of those two structures encompasses most of Laurel.
The area you're referring to is also called Baypoint Park. It has Lyons Rd, Baypoint, Pameto, Palmetto, Pine, etc. My dad lived over in that area for a while. It's kind of a charming cool little area. At least I think it is since I'm a fan of other homes. They have some neat looking ones in Baypoint. It's also a hop skip and a jump over to Nokomis Beach. When my dad lived there he said the water was really bad. So I would suggest a good filtration system if you lived in that area.

My son's old preschool teacher lives on Lyons Bay. She told me she loves it there.

We'll be down there in two weeks so we'll see for ourselves. It sounds and looks like a quiet little town from the posts and photo's and that's what we are looking for. Originally we started looking in Englewood but most of the properties for sale are in scrub jay habitats or in scrub jay buffer zones.

You need to be really careful with that. The jays make it nearly impossible to build on your lot. The other problem is that you can buy the lot and then have them migrate over there.
Here's some more info on the jays: Sarasota County Resource Proctection

That's one of the reasons we decided to stay away from Englewood, the scrub jay situation makes it almost impossible to have peace of mind regarding your purchase. Thanks again for all your help. You've all been super nice.

We looked to buy in Nokomis and agree it's a cute town but couldn't find the house we wanted there. We found our perfect home in Englewood.
Here's something to watch out for: many parts of Nokomis aren't on city water. We looked at a very nice home on a canal but it had a whole house RO (reverse osmosis) system because of the poor water quality. Parts of Nokomis are scheduled to be tied into the city water system over the next several years and you can find that info online. The area we were looking at was never scheduled to be tied in.
Some desirable areas (on Shakett Creek which leads to the gulf) have mobile homes across the street from $400,000 homes. Just the way Florida is in some areas.
Good luck. You'll find your home.

our daughter bought house in May in Nokomis--they did live on Venice Island in small condo--they like their neighborhood and their neighbors seem very nice--friendlier than the ones in the condo--
they back up to Oscar Shearer park and their neighborhood is a bird sanctuary so she keeps her kitties inside or in the pool cage...
frankly we have visited lots over the four years since she married and moved -- just as in some parts of TX there are places where you have homes 500K across the road from a trailer park --
I don't get it but some people don't seem to mind the juxtaposition
