I know this is 4.5 yrs old but I still have to comment. I tip my paper delivery person on my own.I don't have to be asked for it. I make it a point to get up early and watch for him. He doesn't have to leave me a note asking for a tip. While many of you are offended or "put off" by it, I feel the opposite. This guy drives his car to pick up my paper and drive it to my house. Why would I expect him to do that for me ? It's not like it is a guy selling a paper at a news stand. He brings it to me.

These people are making very small pay checks and using their cars, their gas, etc. I feel a tip now and then is the least we can do.

It's not your dentist who is making 400K with a tip jar sitting out or the Starbucks employee with their tip jar. It's some poor person who obviously needs money and this is the best job they can get, for what ever reason.

Maybe instead of "being put off" try just being kind and give the guy/lady a tip.

Or maybe, if we all put our brains together, we can find a way to build a network of computer systems that all connect to each other using TCP/IP and Hyper Text Transfer Protocol and then read the news on this new network of systems for free.

We could even call it ------- the INTERNET!

A 1 with 100 zeros after it is called a Googol, maybe we can even make a place to search for content on this new "INTERNET" and call it "Google" as a tech geek joke.

That'd be really cool.

What's the point of this?
Some people will always like to read a paper with coffee instead of a tablet or something. And on point, please don't be afraid to tip your carrier $50-$100 over the course of a year.
They don't have much longer in this life as beninfl illustrates.

That is a really cool thing to know. I like being in on the joke.

But your whole post just means your youth is showing.

Some call it humor, some call it the obvious..... Take your pick! :-)

I deliver papers. I think it was ridiculous that they did that. Anyways just to put it out there after gas, and supplies (we have to buy the bags and rubber bands) I make out 100 a week. I deliver 300 houses (which is a large route it takes me upwards of 5-6 hours if not raining) this is normal wage for newspaper delivery...how what kills us is when it is windy and your newspaper blows away....you call the newspaper instead of me....that costs me $6 every time and I still have to deliver the replacement paper...now if you called me I would be right over with the new paper at your door instead of waiting until the complaint log to be sent to me at 11 a.m.......I appreciate all tips! Btw saving rubber bands from your paper and returning them to the deliver will save them a bucket load, and trust me we would be very grateful.

I am a newspaper delivery person. I deliver every night, all night, in every kind of weather imaginable (rural Philadelphia suburbs). I pay for my own taxes, use my own vehicle, my own fuel, and pay for my own maintenance (you would not believe how many sets of brake pads, tires and oil changes you go through in a rather short amount of time). I pay for my own plastic bags, rubber bands, paper, printing supplies, and cell phone (all of which are needed to perform my job). Every time someone calls, for ANY reason, I get charged $3.00 PER CALL, even if there are multiple calls in one day. For example, if you call at 7am and want a paper redelivered, and then call again at noon and 2pm, you guessed it: I get charged $9.00 for that one paper.

We do not get vacation days or sick days. I was told one night that even though there was 14" of snow on the ground, and it was snowing 1" per hour, so badly that the USPS stopped delivering that afternoon, it was up to me to not deliver. Just as it was up to to them to a) not pay me and b) charge me for any calls (side note, I LOST $$$ that night from the calls the next day, even though I delivered every house and it took me until almost mid-morning the next day and an extra tank of gas).

I have customers that tip occasionally. Some tip a couple bucks every now and again, some tip me $25 once a month. Heck, an elderly customer who is always awake at 3AM when I roll by her house sometimes gives me coffee and a smile. I appreciate ALL of them. Your mail carrier earns a healthy wage for what he/she does 6 days per week using the USPS vehicles. I do the same job 7 DAYS PER WEEK, with my OWN vehicle, and easily earn HALF of that. I do not think it's forward to ask for a tip with a Xmas card at the end of the year. If you appreciated my service throughout the year, then show it. If you didn't, well then, I hope you never have to deliver a newspaper to someone for a living. Your mindset would change DRASTICALLY.

Then again, those who don't tip are usually the same ones who blame people like me for taking jobs like this to begin with.

You need a job not meant for a middle school or high school kid.

And you need a less judgmental attitude, my friend. You don't know me. But I now know one thing about you. You know nothing about newspaper delivery. Gone are the days of "middle school or high school kids". They are delivered by vehicle, be it car or truck. They are delivered by adults. I dare you to do what I do every night. Pretentious prick.
