Hi all, does anybody have any positives or negatives of this area? The zip is 34234. There are some townhouses there that a friend of mine is thinking about moving into and I would like to get the locals opinion on the area.
She is a single mom so safety is # 1 priority.
Would also like to know how the elementary schools and middle schools are in that area?
How close is it to parks and fun things for the kids to do? I know downtown is just South of there, but is it possible to ride a bike from this area to downtown without risking your life?
The community says its gated, but I know that doesnt necessarily mean it keeps all of the "bad people" out as usually it holds a few in as well

Any insight would be much appreciated! Thanks so much

That street runs west and east of the trail. If you're west of the trail is pretty nice and it's what's known as the Indian Beach neighborhood, east well I'll let other people comment on that. It's basically Newtown Estates. The schools should be Booker Elementary, Middle and High. You can check the ratings for them here: School Accountability Report... I went to Booker Elementary for their preforming arts program as a kid, which by the way was great (the performing arts program). I would classify my experience with the school as very hard to fit in, rough and not the greatest experience. Again, this is just a personal experience. Last I looked all three schools had a "D" rating by the state of Florida but you can look for yourself on the above link.

The area that you would ride your bike from to get to the downtown area is not the greatest, to put it mildly. So others can gauge where she's talking about, it's about a block north of Martin Luther King Blvd. by Ringling School.

I agree with SoFLGal - the area WEST of the Trail is Indian Beach, one of my absolutely favorite and most beautiful areas of Sarasota. Also, Ringling Art College is immediately east and planted square in Newtown. The area across from Trail Plaza is what I consider to be one of the worst in town - it has what I call "bad juju." I would not want to be riding a bike in that area, although you will see plenty of young students around there mixed with some unsavory types. That zip code covers a wide range, and as I said some is great, but part of that zip code covers the worst Sarasota has to offer. If you want to DM me the exact address, I can tell you more specifically what I think, since I live on the north side of town in Whitfield, and go through this area all the time. In fact I shop at the Goodwill in that Trail Plaza! Keep in mind, during the daytime, there are mostly no problems anywhere on the Trail, or even in the ghetto side, but you don't want to be around there at night.
