I keep reading about how dangerous it is to bike in Sarasota, are there any bike paths or plans to build any? My husband and I are looking at homes from Sarasota to Englewood, and I will be visiting at the end of March. I planned on doing some biking around to check out different neighborhoods, but I am a bit concerned about being picked off by a distracted driver. What do the locals have to say about biking in the Sarasota, Venice, Englewood areas?

There is an active cycling scene in Sarasota.I have been riding here since 1984. As you know you can be "picked off" anytime, anywhere. Bikes are considered vehicles in Florida and have the same rights as motorists. Florida has a 3' rule too. Depending on your wants and needs there are plenty of places to ride. I've not used map my ride but it will give you an idea:
