There is a farmer's market in Punta Gorda each Saturday morning (till about 1PM). It is small but the produce is great and there are bakers and butchers as well. There are even orchid sellers.

You're just so Beachymom!

The Punta Gorda farmer's market is great, but still a bit small! They used to have "The Soup Lady" she made fresh soup every week, but she moved to San Fransisco. In addition to the produce, they also have a nice cheese selection, fresh baked breads, goods, and cup cakes, and a good fresh seafood selection brought in from Peace River Seafood, and a nice meat selection as well.

On Wednesday, they have an organic farmer's market at Fisherman's Village. Many of the restaurants in town (chain type restaurants are not allowed in town) use fresh organic produce in thier meals. Really good!

It is a cool little town that has a lot of Character. There are some nice shops in town to visit too. I really recommend checking out the store on Rt 41 as your heading South, just after you cross the bridge. There is a little Cracker House, and I have friends there that make brightly colored, hand made Adirondack chairs and other furniture.

I was about to start a new thread, but then did a quick search, and voila! Great stuff in this thread. Thanks for all the info! We have gathered a little more, so here's a bump:

DiDiadem and I have been meaning to make the change for so long, and have only just recently begun to transition to organic. No, not vegetarian or vegan (have you TRIED a steak? no WAY do I give that up!). Just all-around better food selection, even going so far as to incorporate aspects of raw foods as well. Yes, it's more expensive, but that additional expense is counterbalanced by simply not eating in a restaurant maybe once per month, so we're OK with that.

Here are some useful links we have uncovered in the recent past. Most of them are Sarasota-specific. Feel free to add to the list as you see fit:

Siesta Key Farmers Market

Jessica's Organic Farm in Sarasota Florida

Harvest Cycle - Produce to the People - Organic Delivery By Bicycle in Sarasota, FL - Bicycle Delivery Service - Jessica's Stand Organic, Locally-Grown Produce - Sustainable Business Practice - Sarasota Organic Produce. Produce Delivery Sarasota, Foo

Albert's Organics - Home

Richard's Foodporium| Natural, Organic, Bulk, & Specialty Foods

Living and Raw Foods: The largest community on the internet for living and raw food information
Glowing Temple - living food for sacred bodies
Welcome to Brown's Grove Citrus & Produce

We went to Richard's on Clark yesterday, and it's a great place, really. Although bigger supermarkets (and even Wal-mart, etc...ick) offer organic selections, all in all, it is clearly better for everyone to try to patronize the local establishments/little guys/etc.

Sure, more than a little late to the party, but if that stopped everyone from making a change, nobody'd ever make a change.

And I'd be living in Baltimore eating junk food.

Has anyone heard of or use SunCoast Organics? Suncoastorganics.net

What a concept! Beautiful organic produce delivered weekly to your door! I'd rather pick it myself out of my backyard but, hey, this looks great. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this and how they like it.

I have been recommended suncoast organics! I used to buy amish imported farm meats and veggies from PA when I live in Baltimore and loved it. Esp the meats! Please let me know what you think if you use them.

these are a couple other online shops i've used for healthy cooking/raw/organic ingredients that can be difficult to find:

Natural Zing - Organic raw food, vegan, living, and raw foods

As for Jessica's Market - I can't wait until they reopen in August!!

Good Earth Natural Foods has 3 or 4 locations in Bradenton, it's a nice small natural foods store.

Good Earth Natural Foods - Home Page

I am missing the farm stands this time of year. The one I go to near me is only open 3 days a week for summer, and even when they are the produce is looking a bit sad - it's just too hot.

To Rushmore: I try to incorporate a lot of organics in our diet, or at least local, and if not that healthy home-cooked. Not giving up steak, but only eat it when I cook it myself. I fix steak au poivre with frites once a week for me and hubby - it's his favorite meal and no one fixes it the way we love like I do, and at much less cost!

Woohoo.

For early dinner, I just made filet mignon in a hoisin/soy marinade. They were proteinalicious.

But yeah, maybe once a week from now on, and always at home. I am not paying $30 for a plate of food I can usually make better myself.
