Are you sure about that? I thought Levy's on Broughton had escalators first -- but only going up, not down.

It's a truly bizarre building. Nothing about it is attractive or makes sense from a retail perspective. Where is the front door? What was the main entrance? Where was the ubiquitous Sears auto service center or heavy equipment center? I've always wondered if those arched windows were added after Sears closed. And why does it have what appears to be a giant chimney sticking out on top?

For the longest time I just assumed this was some old medical annex built for the adjacent Telfair Hospital (one block north). I've never been able to picture this being a retail store of any kind. It's truly one of the ugliest buildings in Savannah.

OK I was able to find an old photo of the store (albeit not very good quality). It appears the building was indeed altered significantly in latter years. Ugly!

I am not sure which store had escalators first but I remember I always walked up the down and down the up escalator at Sears.

Ugly? Yes -- but large, solidly constructed buildings within/adjacent to the Historic District will be in demand. Downtown Savannah today is peninsular Charleston in the 1980s. Everything and anything will a roof over it will be at a premium. And with Savannah Landing's and (I hope it really happens) the Canal District's added residents, every homely building north of Victory Dr. will find a use: store, medical offices, SCAD department, etc.

...and then comes more infill. After that, prices go up even more than they have been and density REALLY starts playing a role. Building higher up can help slow inflation to a point.

Good points about the coming infill and density. The traffic/parking situation will be apocalyptic unless the city fathers and mothers start planning to avoid future nightmares. Yes, "building higher" is always the huge temptation in a gentrifying city like Savannah -- now a fact in Williamsburg/Brooklyn and Astoria/Queens (two NYC neighborhoods I don't recognize anymore as the young bearded bros have slowly taken them over). I do hope the Historic Foundation will show its usual spunk and that City Hall will veto taller buildings anywhere within the HD's confines. Otherwise, Savannah will turn into Augusta.

P.S. So now you're "based" in Corpus Christi, Sav'h, metro ATL, and NYC? I read that you moved around to be with a girlfriend. How many GFs do you have?
