Default Staying Month of Dec--E. Jones St, Washington or Crawford Squares?

Hi everyone!! After several visits to your beautiful city, my husband and I are considering moving to Savannah. We have decided to spend the month of December in Savannah (hear it is beautiful and magical) to get a "true" feel for the city and neighborhoods. If we do relocate, it would ONLY be to the Historic District (Yes--We know it is expensive, but prices have dropped there too!). Therefore, we have sought out rentals there and have narrowed our search to 3 properties: 1.) Julian St. on Washington Square (the least expensive): 2.) E. Perry on Crawford Square; and 3.) E. Jones St. between Whitaker & Abercorn (most expensive). We are in our late 50's, and want to be able to walk conveniently and safely, even in the evening, to all the restaurants, galleries, shops, church, etc. We'd very much appreciate all suggestions and help. Thank You!!

All of those locations have their good points. Obviously, the one on St. Julian St. is closest to the river. I like that neighborhood a lot and it is in the oldest remaining part of the district. You'd be closest the most restaurants there, I think.

I've also spent a fair amount of time on that block of E. Jones, which would be the most centrally located, though maybe not closest to the most restaurants, which are generally closer to Broughton St., City Market, and Bay St. Still, it's a very nice street to stay on.

I'm not that fond of E. Perry St. that far east. It's a little too close to the projects to be the safest location for walking at night Unless it is a great apartment, I'd make that one third on my list.

Ellie's assessment is pretty accurate. As a real estate agent who lives and works in the Historic District, I would add as a point of interest that a number of properties around Crawford Square have sold recently and people I know who live in that area feel it's pretty safe. It's not the most central location, though. St Julian is closest to the most restaurants, but being furthest north it adds to your walk when you head further afield--toward Jones Street, for instance. I'm a little biased toward Jones because I lived there for years and am still a block away. One thing about Jones is that you're roughly halfway to Broughton Street/River Street as well as Forsyth Park. If you're going to be taking a walk around Forsyth Park for your daily exercise, you'd be better off on Jones Street. But we're talking pretty short distances either way--it takes maybe 15 minutes to walk from Jones to the river, and if you're out at night, you can always find a student in a pedi-cab to take you home for literally a couple bucks.

Let me know if you have any other questions or need suggestions for what to do.

Matthew
