Sorry about the double post. We had a hiccup on the power line. I didn't know what I had!

That section of town can use a little work, no doubt about it. I'm with Ellie on this. You just have to wonder why anyone with kids would buy a house like that on a street with that much traffic noise.

Ellie raises some good points, not the least of which is this: THERE IS NO SURPRISE IN THESE EXTREME MAKEOVER SHOWS! If anybody REALLY thinks those families don't know what's coming when Ty and Co. pull up with bullhorns and start yelling at them to "come outside" on Day 1, I've got some really nice swamp land in Ware County to sell you.

Seriously, the permitting process alone is enough to reveal exactly what's going on where, when and to whom LONG LONG LONG before it's announced to the public. The surprise here, really, is that the show somehow manages to keep this under wraps for so long?

The story in the paper today did allude to two issues: The permits, and the style of house that will be built on that corner (seeing as how neighborhood groups were concerned that new construction fit in with the historic nature of the area). But the story, alas and no surprise, did not really answer EITHER of those two questions.

Again, this is nothing but a huge publicity scam and marketing scheme veiled as a "do-good" thing for a "down and out" family. This is a TV show, entertainment, plain and simple. You'd think the people of this city, who are so used to being in the national spotlight by now, wouldn't be so gullible as to fall for this crap.

OK I admit it -- curiosity got the best of me and I actually drove thru there last night, and all I can say is ABC must be paying every resident within a 2 block radius of that build site big $$$ for the inconvenience. The bright lights and generators 24/7 have GOT to be pissing some people off big time. Unless they sent the whole freakin' neighborhood to Disney World?!

I still think y'all are a bunch of grumps. We're probably going to take the shuttle to see it today, and I think it's exciting. I could give a fig whether or not the family knew about it in advance or not. I'm pretty interested in how a house gets built in a week.
and Padgett, do you seriously think Savannah doesn't need the tourist industry?

You just haven't been here long enough. After awhile you'll be exposed to more of the really great things that happen here and you'll think back about your excitement over this and wonder.

Not that you're not doing a great job of taking advantage of what Savannah has to offer. Kudos for that.

You mean when I get jaded? You're probably right.

Now, if someone wants to gripe about the wretched stench that hangs over the city all the time, I'm in.

Not jaded so much as a little more exposed to better things. Extreme makeover is a little contrived, to say the least.

Yeah, I know it's not fashionable anymore to be an elitist, but why eat dog food when you know there's something better out there for you?

Yeah, Savannah needs the tourist industry to maintain the artificial atmosphere that is generated by it. It brings in $$$$$$$. A lot of which goes out of town to the owners of the hotels, restautants, etc. We hire a lot of minimum wage hispanic workers to maintain this industry. There are some that even question if the money that stays in Savannah is enough to pay for the wear and tear on the City. It sure helps to keep the parks and squares beautiful. And that is a GOOD thing!

However, it's a big question now as to whether or not, we need MORE.

I get a big kick out of the people that post saying that they always wanted to see Savannah, and then ask, "what is there to do in Savannah?" One has to wonder why they want to come.

There is a lot more to Savannah than the historic district and tourism.
