Question Suburbs of Savannah

My family is looking to relocate to the suburbs of Savannah from Delaware. We do not have any school aged children so that is not a concern. We are looking for a quiet community and do not mind having to drive 30 minutes to our jobs....(we drive a minimum 1 hour each way now). I do understand that the cost of living in this area is lower but so is the real estate market...Delaware is in the verge of becoming one BIG city with growth happening everywhere and no place to run. I have read about the bugs, which in not a problem because most of the DE coast is marshland which always comes with bugs. I understand there will be more crime in Savannah but there is crime in the little area I live in now. Being in Delaware we are close to most major cities in the NE or Mid-Atlantic and we are pretty tired of the traffic...and typically don't visit these areas for that reason. We would like someone's general feel for the area and the people who live there. Thank You!

There is a flurry of new homes being built along I 95 in Chatham county
150-350,000 Some gated, some wired with fiberoptic communications and wifi.
Pooler is the center of West Chatham. Port Wentworth is the northern most burb Exit 109. City of Savannah Incorporated the area between them (Jimmy Deloach Parkway) Exit 106
The outlying counties Effingham and Bryan have built up to the point of commuter hell. Water and sewer first, without thought of roads. If you want land look along 1-16 to Bulloch County, which would be about an hour West of I-95.
We live in PW. What do you want Big and cheap to small and expensive with many amenities.

Thanks for the great information. We are currently looking for jobs. (We are too responsible to pick up and move without them.) Since it will be just two of us, we are not looking for a massive home. Just some elbow room with maybe a little more that a 1/4 acre. (No t/h or m/h) Does PW = Port Wentworth? We do not want to live close to water but like the idea of not having to drive far to get to it for leisure time. Thanks much.

Where is your adventurous spirit?

PW = Port Wentworth
the port is up river from downtown Savannah and the Developing areas were annexed to PW years ago. Savannah City Hall is 10 miles away and PW City Hall is 5 miles away now
3000 live in the tiny old port area and 500 in the massive west port side connected only by a long narrow neck but with 10,000+ homes being built out here the politics are getting interesting

For some reason a mortgage holder typically would like to know that you can repay them. Our adventure spirits are left for when we go on vacation.

The information you provided has been put to good use. I have already started looking into the areas you mentioned.

Default More information about Savannah

My husband & I have seriously looked into relocating to Savannah for a few years now. Here is some information that will hopefully help you:

Ardsley Park - Beautiful community in the city. Many of the older homes have been rehabbed. If you like an older home, the best area to look is 40-53rd Streets.

The Islands - Closer to the beach, mix of older/newer communities. Long Point very popular. Causton Bluff beautiful & has some impressive townhomes.

Southside - I believe this covers Dutch Island, Isle of Hope. Both are very nice. However, you drive through a low end area to get to Dutch Island.

Richmond Hill - nice homes, not much to do out theer. I imagine the area will continue to grow & more amenities will be available. Is 20 minute drive to Savannah @ minimum.

Historic Savannah - Very pricey...there are some lovely newer townhomes in 500-700K range.
