My wife and I are relocating to the Southeast. I have a job that allows me to work out of the home, she also has employment. We currently live in Houston in a historic district and would like a similar home. We are very used to some of the crime that comes along with these areas, although I would like to steer clear of areas that are just too dicey... The goal is to live near the coast and I have narrowed the choice thus far to 3 cities in three states. Jacksonville FL., Savannah GA. and Beaufort S.C. Im not interested in Metro Atlanta, Im moving out of Houston to escape that environment..The most important thing outside the quality of life/coastal living is being close to an airport. JAX is a decent size airport but really doesnt have many more direct flights than Savannah or Charleston. We would utlize the Savannah or Charleston airports if we decide to live in Beaufort.

Any thoughts or ideas please chime in!!

Thank you all!

Jacksonville has a huge metro area. I'd say it's nearly as bad as Atlanta in a lot of ways. I personally wouldn't want to live there.

Otherwise, you need to decide if you want to live in a larger or smaller city. That's the main difference between Savannah and Beaufort, really.

Jacksonville is quite a bit larger than Savannah and Beaufort. While I wouldn't put it in the same boat as Atlanta, it certainly has rush hour traffic like that of a large city. The metro itself has 1.5 million people.

If you're looking for something with history and southern charm, both Savannah and Beaufort have Jacksonville beat. Savannah will definitely have more to offer than Beaufort as far as amenities and closer proximity to a major airport. Downtown Savannah is about 20-25 minutes away from Tybee Island, our beach. I'm pretty sure it's farther to travel to the nearest beach in Beaufort.

IMO, I'd choose Savannah over Beaufort any day, though I suppose my opinion is bias considering I live here.

Continental flies direct from Savannah to Bush.
Southwest flies direct from Jax to Hobby.

There's your answer...

If you're gay, the aforementioned Riverside/Avondale is a good place to live in Jacksonville. Since you're married, I'd say look towards the southside or near the beach. The Baymeadows area is very nice and is affordable.

Agreed. There are plenty of gay folk in downtown Savannah. I say the more the better. Most of them have a reputation of cleaning up blighted areas. That and they're very kind hearted!

If I was a city manager I would look at creating programs designed to attract this demographic to historic "blighted" areas....

Savannah is nice, are you looking to do some boating or do you want to live on the beach? You could live on Tybee year round or downtown in the historic dist. also how often do you fly?
