The Georgia Attorney General's Office announced late this afternoon that they have begun a formal inquiry into complaints of alleged illegal activity involving the search for a new Savannah City Manager by the mayor and council. Short story is now online at SMN; full report due in Saturday's paper.

I've been wondering how long it would take for the justice system to get involved. Thank goodness for checks and balances. I'd been weighing the pros and cons of calling in the tea party so we could all watch a truly righteous throwdown.

Right now directv is rerunning the wire on channel 101....I think Baltimore where the series is based and Savannah have a lot in common. Both democratic controlled cities, large african american communities who vote democratic in block.

There are in the third season right now and David Simon focused this season on the political aspects of city government. I can't help but see similarities between Otis and the mayor of Baltimore. In the third series a white council member sees the corruption and starts maneuvering a run for mayor. In order to do this he realizes he must expose the corruption by the mayor, encourage a reformer black candidate to run against the mayor and then run himself thus splitting the democratic ticket 3 ways.

Also in real life the successor to the white candidate was just recently indicted and convicted last year and resigned.

But if you haven't seen the series check it out as it parrallels politics here in Savannah to a tee.

I can't see Mr. Johnson stepping down since he has made it clear that he doesn't care what the citizens think of him. However, if he did, that would leave Edna Jackson in charge since she is Mayor Pro Tem. I think that she has been in lock-step with the mayor throughout this process of searching for a city manager, so she isn't going to be any better. In fact, that might make it easier for HER to get elected as mayor.

It might be better to focus on the illegal allegations of the closed meetings and the whole "search" process AND on if Small-Toney can be truly bonded.
