The latest guide lines for zones will put Savannah in zone 9A. It's just a little different from the rest of zone 8B because of the warmth and humidity of the rivers and ocean. If you are on the west side of Chatham County, you can work more with the 8B type of plantings.

There are some hostas that are supposed to do OK in this area. Be sure to check.

yeah, it's on of those borderline things. It's a narrow strip that goes down the coast. Mild winters are very different from what we had this year. For example: Amaryllis often do not lose green during the winter. Hibiscus do well. This year, not only did I lose all the green amaryllis foliage, but I even lost some bulbs as well. My Hibiscus "tree" which I have had for over 19 years, was killed. It doesn't look as if it will come back.

Your best bet for long term plantings, is to look at the range. If it's like 4-8, it will probably not do well. A 7-9 range would do better.

Another thing, your ground probably is slightly acid. It would be worth your while to have it tested before your fall plants go in.

I have seen plantings of astribes. I think most have been planted where they get too much heat. Your spot may turn out to be ideal. It's worth a try.

I'll tell you what is thriving so far in my yard....Knockout roses are really doing great, bottlebrush, Encore azaleas (which bloom x3 a year), butterfly bush, asclepia, lantana, rudbeckia. These are in full sun.
There are boxwood, japanese holly and hawthorne which are doing well also. Sago palms do well here in zone 8, and those japanese holly ferns are really pretty in the shade.

I like the list! I have a few of those. I had sago palms, but after reading how lethal they are I dug them up and gave them away (Came with my house) Thanks

Default Gardening clubs?

Are there any gardening clubs in the Savannah/Richmond Hill area? This would be a great way to make new friends with similiar interests that can guide you through your gardening experience. I am a soon to be relocated gardener who would love to have this information as well...I will be living in the Richmond Hill area and working at Armstrong. Their gardens actually the entire campus) are/is lovely and I would suggest a walk through just to see what they have planted. They have the name of the plants posted so you can know immediately what you are looking at.
