Hi all,

I'm starting on some initial research into moving to a warmer climate. I'm wondering if there are any Savannah neighborhoods that have a village feel (small shops, loads of restaurants / cafes / bars) and are walkable. Additionally, it would need to be safe with kids around for my nearly 7 year old daughter. Good schools, at least good private schools, are a must, but we don't want to be somewhere that has a cul-de-sac / suburb feel. We are definitely looking for a place where you can walk to the coffee shop along tree-lined streets. On top of all that, a little funky would be a wonderful plus!

Thanks,
f

About the only place in Savannah that would give you everything you want, would be in the downtown Historic District. The Areas that would give you the tree lined streets, good for walking, would not have the shopping, restaurants, or the coffee shops. Savannah is spread out and automobile dependent.

The above post is credited. The historic district is the only place that will give you what you want, so be prepared to pay for it (not cheap). In fact, if you are looking for a place that will allow you to walk to a coffee shop, you're pretty limited to the part of the historic district you can live; a lot of those places are small apartments that mainly rent to SCAD students, etc. As for good private schools, there's tons of them, but none of them are in the historic district.

I have a friend that lives off of habersham on 64th and she walks to the grocery store, drugstore, there are cafes, restaurants, liquor store and a few other shops (kids shop, cake shop, printer, can't remember the others). That ONE little area seems to be pretty safe. She walks all the time with her dogs. And it is right by a pretty good elementary school (walking distance from her house). Certainly seems safer than walking around downtown. There might be a few other places off of Waters in the numbered streets kinda close to Memorial Hospital and Calvary School, but I would have no idea how safe it would be to be walking around since I don't know anyone that lives over there.
