It's the "encroachment" part that got me. You do know of course that Savannah is one of the largest ports on the Eastern city board. The "encroachment" started way back during the days of the ark when trade ships came into the port loaded with ballasts that happen to now be the "cobblestone" when you walk down from bay street to River street.

There's no encroachment.... that's vibrant city living. Vibrant in that we have it all---culture, archicture, tourism, labor and the port.

BTW the smell you mentioned in another part of your post isn't the river, it's the mill. (Plenty on that subject here if you want to search it.)

okay. Wasn't saying it was the river, just smelled it while being down by the river which kinda kills the ambience some?.. That and fecal matter closing your best beaches kinda qualifies as "encroachment of industry" in my book, but whatever.

Anyway, was just an opinion from spending one day walking around the city. Best point of comparison I have is Wilmington, NC (Another huge port on the eastern seaboard) and just preferred their waterfront I guess? But history-wise Savannah wins hands down....

That's a neat tidbit about the cobblestones being ship's ballast... Have to remember that factoid as my daughter might be heading back (and possible me with her) for the Girl Scout Anniversary this year....

Getting back to the original question...

The camelias are in bloom in the squares right now, even though its winter.
