Melissa, if you can't appreciate the obvious benefits of living in Savannah -- the incredible history, the sense of place and tradition, the breathtaking natural beauty, the ecological masterpiece that is the pristine Georgia coast -- I don't think anything can help you. You obviously have a bias toward whatever place up North you are from -- and that is fine. Just ask your military hubby to request a transfer back to you're from so tou can find happiness. But meantime, do us a favor and stay off of Web sites like this bad-mouthing those of us who love living here and consider it a paradise. You're making yourself look foolish.

Haha, really? Foolish? Just because I don't like a city and I'm trying hard to figure out why anyone likes this place? Ok then... but no one has really answered my question. How do you enjoy Savannah unless you are loaded? I can't see any benefit of being here as middle class because all the nice places a re EXPENSIVE! Can barely get a middle class job here because the city is full of poor people and the employers take advantage of it. Cost of living isn't even cheap compared to where I'm from, places cost the same to rent.

I was born and raised in the Savannah area, and lived here for most of my adult life, but with a glad heart, am moving away at the end of this month.
The point of City-data is not to have a love fest about a particular place, but to provide multiple perspectives to living somewhere.
Now, I, too, have been beat up by some of the very posters who are badgering Melissa, and it's just not very nice.
For myself, I found life here very dull, and missed a wider range of shopping and cultural offerings. I grew up WITHOUT air conditioning in SE Georgia, so I'm used to the heat and humidity. I am also dismayed by the lack of meritocracy in both professional (which I am by occupation) and other circles. What matters more in Savannah is who you know rather than what you know.
Melissa, you are NOT a bad person, and it's OK not to think Savannah is the best thing since sliced bread. It did not fit my needs, but it does for many others. I (and perhaps Melissa) was just not one of those people.
^^^^ GO BACK TO CANADA THEN! Sheesh! I bet the people you work with just LOVE you! What a whiny selfish cry baby you are!
Wow, are you really sitting here calling me names because I disagree with people who like this place and I'm trying to understand why? I'm allowed to voice my opinion and so are you but... wow, I seriously just want to laugh in your face.
No, Melissa -- your exact words were "I'm trying hard to figure out why anyone likes this place" (which implies the people who DO like it are beneath you) and "No one has answered my question." I very specifically answered your question --- people love Savannah for its history, its traditions, its beauty, its pristine coastal ecosystem. The fact that you don't enjoy these things or choose to ignore them is YOUR problem, not mine! I don't care if you like it here or not, but damned if I have to sit by and listen to you whine about it -- and insult me and my neighbors in the process! You've done nothing ALL DAY LONG TODAY but post repetitive negative comments about Savannah on this site -- clearly monitoring the new comments so you can post quick replies yourself. That's called BEING A TROLL! Yep, honey: you are a TROLL -- somebody who repeatedly posts inflammatory comments in an internet chatroom in the hopes of illiciting an emotional (negative reactionary) response. You really don't care about liking Savannah -- you only care about your ego.
So yeah, after a day of this WE GET IT -- You don't like Savannah, and that's fine. I think most of the responders on here have admitted it's not for everyone. And yet, you continue to badger and insult anybody who DOES enjoy living here. You even admit you're leaving in 6 months anyway, right? So SHUT UP ALREADY and start marking the days on your calendar. PLEASE!

I can't see why it's so bad for someone to try and like a place. I don't want to move again. I really like my job and I'm trying to find a way to bear living here. It would be great if my husband and I could both stay here and go to University but I don't like it here (no matter how hard I try), neither does he.
But yeah, no one answered my question. If you love Savannah, are you wealthy or come from an even poorer area and this place is just that much better?
I'll give it a try. But I don't think you'll think the same that I do.
I was born here. My husband was born in South Georiga. We both like the flat country, the marshes, fishing, crabbing, shrimping. We love the drive over the marshes to the beach. Don't care much for the beach, but I find the marsh is peaceful and can make my day.
Are we wealthy? Well, if you consider having a Social Security Income of less than $2000 per month, wealthy, I guess we are. We own our own home and recently gave a grandchild one of our cars.
We don't have to bundle up in the winter. I can wear sneakers all year around. I don't even own mittens or a scarf. Savannah is pretty, we can grow camillias and azaleas. We LIKE the swamps. We think the cypress trees great!
And YES, it's hot and muggy in the Summer. But the rest makes it worth while. I could not live in the mountains. I want Flat places to walk and lots of trees.
I do not like cold weather. Snow is pretty, but I can do without it in order to have flowers during the winter.
I am neither rich nor poor, but originally from a suburban area of Atlanta that is quite affluent -- as well as 80 percent white and rather homogenous, with low crime and very good schools. The place where I grew up has little history and no soul. It's very Republican ... to the point that every single elected office in the county and city is held by the GOP. Liberals? Forget it. Gay people? HA!
What I love and appreciate about Savannah is ... IT IS REAL! It's a historic Southern city (and a stunningly beautiful one to boot!) but also a true melting pot of people and cultures from ALL OVER THE WORLD! It is everything my hometown in Metro Atlanta is not -- and I love that! Have you spent any time at all downtown trying discover this side of Savannah? Have you met the people, strolled through the squares and Forsyth Park, attended an outdoor concert under the stars, seen one of our excellent live theater productions, been to an art gallery open, or simply sat on the river and watched the massive ships come in? Have you hiked the nature trails at Skidaway Island State Park, driven along the bluff in Isle of Hope, searched for alligators at the National Wildlife Refuge?
The thing that makes Savannah so special is its unpredictability and quirkiness -- people here generally enjoy life and know how to have a good time no matter what their situation. It's a laid-back, party town with a funky vibe. Savannah very much is a place that people are drawn to and WANT to move to, and so they figure out a way to do so. This has created a creative / entrepreneur class of young people in Savannah who may not be the richest in the world, but they've contributed greatly to the fabric of life in this city. And they are content with it, warts and all. I only wish you could be so happy.
I don't know, it's always much too hot to do things like that I find. I do enjoy the spring and fall here though and do lots of fishing, running the dog, etc.
I can't say there is a lot of culture here because it's nothing compared to what I'm used to up North. We have people from all around the world, literally. My hometown is an immigration hub, lol. I miss all the food.
Melissa, have you ever mentioned the name of the utopian city you are from?
