I close on my house Friday and I'm trying to get everything set up. I am not sure about trash pickup. My realtor said, call around and find the best price..... I've always had local county pickup or city pickup where I've lived before..... ANy suggestions?!?!?!

What is this "subscription" for the Fire Deparment? I was told by a coworker - lifelong Savannahian, that if you don't subscribe, they only keep the neighbors houses from burning down.... this was probably a joke, but he did say you have to have it....

if your home is in the County, your fire department is most likely manned by voluteers and others paid for by subscription and not Tax money. Therefore, If someone thinks that they can not pay the fee and still have protection, they are wrong. They are gambling and hoping that their house never catches on fire.

People living within the Savannah City Limits are protected by the City fire department. Paid for by Tax money from City residents.

There are various garbage pickup services in the County. The rates depend on what they do. Once a week or twice a week. Back Door service or roll cart out to the curb. Your choice.

We have twice a week back door service. Not all companies offer it. This is the most expensive, but I think it's worth it. We had once a week curb pickup once, and usually forgot to put the cart out in time for pick up. That meant a two week collection. UGH!!!

Since you will be closing on Friday, be sure and ask if the house is in the City Limits. It makes a difference on Insurance, taxes, a lot of things. Your realtor should know.

Chatham County
Chatham County Public Works Department: Yard Waste and Bulky Item Collection Schedules

I usually call people and ask dumb questions, or ask my neighbors. Btw, it would help us if we knew what part of the county you are moving to.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

oh yeah! another thing to remember.

Garbage pickup is not the same as trash pickup. "Trash" in this area is yard debris and stuff that you don't put in the garbage can. The County does do trash pickup, but you have to have it in proper order----that is to say, limbs cut to a certain length, leaves in containers and not just raked into a pile, etc.

there is one garbage company in the County....I forgot the name, also furnishes a container for recycling. You don't have to sort the stuff, just dump it in and they pick it up every two weeks.

sorry, still on Wilmington Island, just about 2 miles from the apartment....
no direct neighbors, the houses on either side are for sale too..... I think I remember seeing Savannah Waste on the bins that were there..... but since the owner isn't paying for anything, I'm sure they picked them up for non payment. I think I remember seeing the cans in the driveway on Thursday, I think I'll drive over in the morning to check out the neighbors down the street.

thanks for the waste/trash defination. I'm used to 1 company = the county twice weekly pick ups in Decatur....

Yeah, the fire thing is kinda weird. Fire service in UNICORPORATED CHATHAM COUNTY is provided by a private non-profit company called SOUTHSIDE FIRE DEPARTMENT (regardless of whether you're on the Southside or not; Wilmington Island is served by SSFD). I also rent and thus can't speak to the details, but my understanding is it is NOT expensive and you are billed annually ... and a fool not to have it! Because yes it is true: If you don't have fire service, they will show up to make sure the houses on either side are protected and let your's burn down.
