Cheap, Safe & Clean motel about 5 mi. from Historic District?
My daughter and I are coming into town tomorrow night (9/21). We are visiting Savannah School of Art & Design on Saturday. We only need to stay that one night and are on a very tight budget. I found a place called America's Best Value at 4005 Ogeechee Road, but it's so inexpensive at about $50 a night, I'm afraid it's unsafe or a dump. Does anyone know?
I also found a place called the Relax Inn on Abercorn Street at $81, and the Fairfield Inn on Lee Road (I think), for about $70.
We don't care if it's not fancy. Just safe and clean. And we'd like to be able to drive into the Historic District within 20 min. Any suggestings or warnings of places NOT to stay in?
Thanks so much!

Please forget about the one on Ogeechee Road. It would also be awkward to get into the SCAD area.
The other two will be about five easy miles from Scad. This is the Midtown Area with a direct route along Abercorn. The Fairfield is on Lee BLVD, and about 1/2 block from Abercorn.

Meanwhile, I called Chamber of Commerce and they said there would be tons of traffic on Abercorn so even though it's closer they said it would take a long time to get into the Historic District. They recommended West Chatham or Pooler. Then I found a place called Inn at Mulberry Grove on O'Leary Road in Port Wentworth which is about 12-13 miles away. But it looks like a really nice place and the rate I got is only $72! Does that sound like a good choice?

I don't know about that place but a good place to look would be hotels off of exit 102 @ I95 in the Pooler area. There are quite a few hotels there that are priced very reasonable. Jameson Inn is one of them. You would be about 20 minutes from downtown.

I don't know who you talked to at the Chamber but I suspect they haven't lived in Savannah long. Yes, the traffic on Abercorn is heavy in the mornings and afternoons, but it will all be going in the direction that you want to go. It also moves quickly.
It's one of those six or one or half dozen of the other. Since you and your daughter are thinking about SCAD, staying on the West Side or at Pooler will not let her see quite the same things about Savannah as the motels on Abercorn. As you drive into the Historic District, you will get a better feel of what Savannah is and what it looks like.

Padgett is right. Staying on Abercorn in midtown would probaly be the best option. And I don't know what the person at the Chamber was thinking either. It is about a 10 minute drive from that location to downtown.
That would be a much better place to stay than Port Wentworth IMO.

Just wanted to let you know and thank you for the suggestion to stay on Abercorn. It was such an easy ride into town and certainly quick. I'm so glad we stayed there.
